[solved] printing with KDE to a Wifi HP OfficeJet

I've ned to print to a network printerr. It is an Office Jet 8020.

I've read the cups wiki.

cups and avahi are st up and running

I have installed all foomatic packages as will as hplip drivers.

I am using KDE Preferences to set up the printing.

when scanning for printers, I get this error

Failed to group devices: 'The name org.fedoraproject.Config.Printing was not provided by any .service files'

avahi eventually sees the printer. it has three entries, one by ip address, one by DNS, and one that asks for connection by http, ipp,,ipd, or socket.

each time I try to set up the printer, I select the device by DNS or IP. I get the error I mentioned above, but then I select the driver from the list (there are two for this model and I've tried both), however hitting "apply" does nothing. System Settings does not show a connected printer.

I have this from the printer's ip address

/usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp 192.168.4.28
INFO: Using default SNMP Community public
network socket://192.168.4.28:9100 "HP OfficeJet 8020 series" "HP OfficeJet 8020 series" "MFG:HP;MDL:HP OfficeJet 8020 series;CMD:PCL3GUI,PCL3,PJL,Automatic,JPEG,AppleRaster,PWGRaster,PCLM,DW-PCL,802.11,802.3,DESKJET,DYN;CLS:PRINTER;DES:3UC65A;CID:HPIJVIPAV9;LEDMDIS:USB#FF#04#01,USB#FF#CC#00;MCT:MF;MCL:DI;MCV:3.0;SN:TH0CM5R0DV;S:038888C48400000100580c800004506000a4406000a4606000a41000032;Z:05000009000009000009000009000009,12000,17000000000046000046000046000000,180;" ""

I am entirely new to this. I have never printed with linux, and could use a hand.

Thanks.

Re: [solved] printing with KDE to a Wifi HP OfficeJet

The most common printing system on linux is called CUPS, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CUPS .

KDE preferences for printing are merely a graphical frontend with limited capabilites .

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CUPS/P … lems#HPLIP

Your printer is on the list of hplip supported printers, but needs a proprietary plugin .
Try installing hplip-plugin from aur and use the hpsetup method from command line as shown on that wiki section to set it up correctly.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

thanks. running

hp-setup -i 192.168.x.x

with hplip-plugins installed fixed my issue. The printer now appears in LibreOffice as available and works. I appreciate your time.
