The machine I'm trying to setup has Intel HD graphics 2500 along with NVIDIA GeForce GT 620 OEM and an LCD connected through VGA. Without a configuration file Xorg is able to run using Intel graphics. After installing nvidia-390xx packages, following instructions to use NVIDIA graphics only and rebooting, when Xorg tries to run, the whole display gets turned off, in other words no signal is sent through the VGA port, though lock keys seem to still respond. Switching to other virtual terminals using Ctrl+Alt+Fn brings back video with the usual text mode interface.

Did you
Next, add the following two lines to the beginning of your ~/.xinitrc
?
Do you use xinit at all?

So, if likely you're not using xinit but a display manager, did you see the paragraphs below that statement?
Most DMs (afaik all but XDM) won't care about your xinitrc.

Ah, SDDM (probably) runs as root but you logged into your regular user.
Edit: maybe I should post less memes or think more before.
Log into a root shell, in doubt "sudo -i".
Otherwise the subshell and export become more complicated.

Those commands were run as root, I tried user also and it gave "Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key" rather.

There's /usr/lib/sysusers.d/sddm.conf so SDDM probably runs as "sddm" user ("ps aux | grep sddm")
Try
(sudo -u sddm xrandr --display :0 --listproviders && sudo -u sddm xrandr --display :0 -q) | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.stOffline
Still this output:

Is there an X11 server running at all at this point?
sudo xhost +will disable authorization completeley in that case and (hopefully) allow you to proceed.

I still see Xorg, sddm, sddm-greeter,... in htop.

I just borrowed an HDMI to VGA converter, plugged it into the graphics card's HDMI port and apparently the signal is there, rather than the VGA port. So now the issue boils down to how to redirect this output to the VGA port. Should I also update the title?

You might just have to "xrandr --output VGA-1-1 --auto" or so, though it would really help to be able to inspect the randr config while SDDM is running on X11…
Offline
After being able to log in the commands run successfully now.
Offline
Ok, but that's w/ the HDMI adapter.
(At least we know that the provider names match the example in the wiki, so no error potential there)
What's "xrandr -q" when you plug an output into the VGA jack?
Offline
With both ports connected: https://0x0.st/o1v9.txt
Offline
So the output on VGA-1-1 is detected, do you see anything on it (is there a signal)?
Did you try "xrandr --output VGA-1-1 --auto" in /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup ?
Offline
After logging in I can enable the display through KDE's system tray, so now it's just that SDDM won't display the login on the VGA. I tried adding that in Xsetup along with --output HDMI-0 --off too, which didn't work.
Offline
You're not forking any commands in the Xsetup script, are you?
Try "sleep 1" between the two commands.
Offline
That doesn't have any effect either.
The current Xsetup script is now:
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --off
sleep 1
xrandr --output VGA-1-1 --autoLast edited by leduyquang753 (2022-07-18 02:38:06)

Debug what's going on there…
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr -q > /tmp/sddm.dbg.1
sleep 1
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --off
xrandr -q > /tmp/sddm.dbg.2
sleep 1
xrandr --output VGA-1-1 --auto
xrandr -q > /tmp/sddm.dbg.3Offline
Nothing is written out, those files aren't even created. I tried &> which didn't do anything either.

Means the file isn't executed.
stat /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup
systemctl status sddmOffline
