Do you still have the strace?
Saw some messages related to the theme (Jolly-GTK)
You tried a new profile, but have you actually tried a new user?
To hammer home the CSS thing, store those as /tmp/test1.htm and /tmp/test2.htm
<html><body><head></head>
foo
<pre>bar</pre>
<em>snafu</em>
</body></html><html><body>
<head>
<style>
body {background-color: white; color:black;}
pre {color: dodgerblue;}
em {color: red;}
</style>
</head>
foo
<pre>bar</pre>
<em>snafu</em>
</body></html>and see whether you can open them as file:///tmp/test1.htm or file:///tmp/test2.htm

I do still have the trace (8.5MB).
I did try a new profile and a new user. No luck.
I am unable to open the files in /tmp from Firefox.

I checked it earlier right after I updated. Arch and Slackware. Issue still persists.

No changes here other than staying on top of updates in both Arch/Slackware Linux.
Was checking if the issue got resolved after each Firefox update.
Updated today to Firefox 106.0.1 and the issue is resolved.
Cheers
