Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

I run an up-to-date Archlinux on a Dell Ultrasharp U3219Q 32" monitor, at a 3840x2160 resolution.
My graphic card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4GB of memory, I run the proprietary blob driver version 515.57-9 on X11, with GNOME.
The motherboard is a Asus Z170-A, and the CPU is a Intel i7-6700K (8) @ 4.200GHz. The monitor is connected with the DisplayPort port, with a DP1.4 cable.

The documentation of the monitor, on page 15, shows that the maximum frequency that it should be capable of at this resolution is 60hz. This website (not nvidia's website) shows that the GPU should be able to handle 7680 x 4320 @60 Hz. Wikipedia shows that DP1.2 brought HBR2 that should allow 4K resolutions at 60hz.

However despite all of this, the GNOME settings menu, and xrandr, consider the maximum is 30hz:

$ lspci -knn | grep VGA -A1

DVI-D-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Edit: without changing anything, after a reboot I could get 60hz from the display, but the next reboot it was gone, and I never came back since.

How can I fix this and get 60hz?

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

Did you get the cable w/ the monitor?
Check the xorg log and what it says about the maximum pixel clock for the output - also the edid should be in there (otherwise /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-0/edid)

The manual suggests a modeline w/ reduced blanking is required to get <= 533MHz, you can try to add one, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xrandr … esolutions

% cvt12 3840 2160 60 -b
# 3840x2160 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 60.000 Hz; hsync: 133.320 kHz; pclk: 522.61 MHz
Modeline "3840x2160_60.00_rb2" 522.61 3840 3848 3880 3920 2160 2208 2216 2222 +hsync -vsync
% cvt12 3840 2160 60 -r
# 3840x2160 @ 60.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 59.997 Hz; hsync: 133.312 kHz; pclk: 533.25 MHz # this one seems preferred by the monitor
Modeline "3840x2160_60.00_rb1" 533.25 3840 3888 3920 4000 2160 2163 2168 2222 +hsync -vsync

but w/o HBR2 that won't work either.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

I could not be sure of the DP version of my cable so I went to a store to buy a DP1.4 cable. When I restarted my computer, BEFORE I changed my cable, the frequency was 60hz. I am not sure what happened, but it seems this issue is solved.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

Attenuation? Interference?
The old cable might be sometimes good enough for the signal - the behavior would then be non-deterministic but should™ be stable w/ the new cable.

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

I started my computer again today with the brand new DP1.4 cable, and I am back at 30hz.
I am not sure what is going on.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

Are there other videocards in this system ?
(if unsure, post full lspci -k output).

A Xorg log should be helpful also, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General for info how/where to find that.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

I have a Dell U2718Q Ultrasharp monitor at a 3840x2160 resolution. Using KDE Sometimes I seemed to get 30hz instead of 60hz. Trial and error seems to have cured it.
Is the monitor set to "auto select input device".  Also try choosing  HDMI and then back to DP on the screen controls as this rectified it for me. Good Luck.

A few days and a few reboots later, I am still with 30hz, even with the DP1.4 cable.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

lspci -k only shows one videocard, the nvidia one.

The Z170-A does have connectors for displays, but they connect to an integrated intel gpu.
Your processor may not have one, or it's disabled in firmware . Which of those doesn't really matter.

[     5.485] (==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"

post the output of ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and the content of the files it lists .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

cat /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-0/edid | edid-decode

And you should also test w/o

I have no such file like /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-0/edid.

 ls /sys/class/drm/card0/
dev device power subsystem uevent

There is no file name edid anywhere in this directory.

However maybe this provides the information you are looking for?

This part is for backlight control. The 30hz frequency problem is the same with or without this.

I have no such file

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting

This part is for backlight control.

I know, the idea was that the I2C manipulation might have detremental impact on the signal.

Ok, I have removed the file and rebooted to be sure this does not interfere.

Any updates to the status quo? Does the xorg log say that it filtered modes?
Did you try to add the modeline, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 0#p2049230 (2nd one should be fine)?

Finally: stuff => wall.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

I unplugged then replugged the cable, and now I have 60hz. It seems to survive a reboot for now. I suppose this will break someday so I will be able to find if xorg filtered modes or not, and try to manually add modelines to the edid.

Re: Dell U3219Q monitor frequency is only 30hz in 4K when it could do 60hz

I am not sure to understand what you mean.

Those options disable a bunch of nvidias modeline filters.

manually add modelines to the edid

The edid is actually fine and doesn't need to be edited. You'd have to add the modes to the X11 server.

I unplugged then replugged the cable, and now I have 60hz. It seems to survive a reboot for now.

If it's stable and you feel lucky, you could try and see whether removing nvidia-drm.modeset=1 breaks it again…
