DVD mounting/reading problems

problem : can not read newly burned DVDs (DVD-R, DVD+RW) ? I can read normal DVD - cdroms, but . I tried k3b - nerolinux - tkdvd etc. same thing ? I can read the same DVD in winXP ! :-} .
my fstab look like this :
/dev/hdc                /mnt/cd   auto          ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
/dev/hdc                /mnt/dvd  auto       ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
/dev/floppy             /mnt/fl   vfat      user,noauto             0      0

I running all the last updates and 2.6.17-ARCH.

no problems with norm. CD-roms !?

any clues ?

Re: DVD mounting/reading problems

Try reading dvd's as root. If you can then your probably not part of the Optical group. In that case...

usermod -a -G optical username

That should add your user to the optical group. Then logout of your username and then back in, and try giving the dvd a try.

Other than that i'm not too sure. It seems weird that its only some dvd's, are you sure its not a problem with the drive in some way?

Re: DVD mounting/reading problems

whats on the DVD's /CD's ? and are they single or dual layer?
are you aware of the difference between say a data cd and an audio cd with regard to mounting or playing direct ?

Re: DVD mounting/reading problems

Thx for your reponds
user is in the "optical" group so that's not it, And it used to work before 2.6.17

Yes, this is Data dvd and I know one can't mount a audio CD only play it from a progz.

tried mount as root first : #mount /mnt/dvd  - did not work! then mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc  /mnt/dvd -> YES it worked !?
and now I could mount as normal user to !?

Now I notice that
#lsmod gave me
msdos                   7552  0
udf                    68612  0
nls_cp437               6272  2
vfat                    9856  2
fat                    40732  2 msdos,vfat
sd_mod                 14848  3
isofs                  28736  1
zlib_inflate           14848  1 isofs

ahhaa I see they were not loaded before, so that the problem. Only root made them load
So I guess I have to reg. them in /etc/rc.conf

is that why my DVD burning was going so/unstable bad too ?

still there is some voodoo...
This DVD I can NOT read but it reads fine i winXP ??

i added myself to the optical group, and when i run "groups brian" as root i am able to see optical in there, but when i run as myself (brian) the command "groups" then i dont see optical.

Re: DVD mounting/reading problems

@ briancurtin: Have you logged out of all active sessions or rebooted since you added yourself to the optical group?

@kahazdar: where are you trying to read the disk from? is this direct access to /dev/dvd or have you mounted it via some method

@BlueThumb: the "capability" module may need to be loaded to fix your burning problem. i never have had to use it but i rememeber something about loading it if you have problems..

it also seems like the dvd you cant read may be mounting with the wrong filesystem type perhaps?

hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x30 { LastFailedSense=0x03 }

that would lead me to believe its a bad burn of the dvd, but if it reads in windows i'm not too sure.. i'll keep thinking and hopefully i can come up with something

Re: DVD mounting/reading problems

Hmmm... I still have this DVD problem I tried to make a new DVD-r in K3b with iso level 3 and in DAO, it burned right and I could mount it, play abit and then it hang !! I got in dmegs.
ATAPI device hdc:
Error: Medium error -- (Sense key=0x03)
  Unrecovered read error -- (asc=0x11, ascq=0x00)
The failed "Read 10" packet command was:
  "28 00 00 00 09 d0 00 00 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 10048
printk: 56 messages suppressed.
Buffer I/O error on device hdc,

so it looks like some reading errors .
I found this link on :
http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/archiv … 47041.html

Might it be a bug hunting me down
It work great with CD/CDR !
