[SOLVED] OpenGL applications use llvm instead of Nvidia

Hello! This is my first time posting here.

I've installed Arch recently on my old notebook (which I want to use for both work and games) and after installing nvidia drivers, opengl applications ignore nvidia drivers and use the integrated gpu instead, which I find odd since I installed GNOME 42 and it does pick up nvidia drivers.

I've confirmed on a few games that they are not using the nvidia drivers since perfomance was REALLY BAD (I know its old hardware but it should run cs1.6 with no issues but it doesn't) and after messing around in their console/settings, the games only saw Mesa Driver / llvm OpenGL.

Here's my current setup and what I've done trying to solve this issue:

My notebook is an Acer Aspire E5-511G, which has both and intel integrated gpu and a nvidia geforce 810m

Following the the archwiki article for Nvidia Optimus (particularly the "Use NVIDIA graphics only" section, since I only want to use NVIDIA:

  • I installed nvidia-390xx-utils package, then created the config file at etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

  • enabled nvidia-drm to avoid screen tearing (it worked, yay!)

  • configured GDM to use X as backend.

I've read many posts like mine before which they were either messing with xorg.conf files (didn't work for me, gnome didn't even bother to start after editing .conf files) or had newer graphic cards which could use nvidia-prime and as far as I know 390 drivers do not support nvidia-prime

I'll gladly post logs or command outputs, any insight / help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'll gladly post logs or command outputs

Start w/ the output of "lspci -k" and your xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Also the wiki article you posted mentions that GDM users should check systemd journal and that is quite the chunk of text, should I post it too "as is"? or should I filter it in some way?

Re: [SOLVED] OpenGL applications use llvm instead of Nvidia

[     7.317] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sat Jul 30 23:10:50 2022

is dated (and the server terminated after ~30 seconds)
That server however ran on the nvida device and driver (which is a 3D chip "only", so it has to use the intel chip as VGA proxy)

The wiki links you forward to http://who-t.blogspot.com/2014/03/viewi … alctl.html but you can also just post the system journal, yes.

I suspect your problem is w/ the 32bit libraries

glxinfo -B
glxinfo32 -B

Re: [SOLVED] OpenGL applications use llvm instead of Nvidia

Your suspicion was right! glxinfo32 was not found on my system so I proceeded to install lib32 packages. I had to enable multilib repositories on pacman.conf to download those and now it works as its supposed to, thank you!

Now that I reread the nvidia driver article, I definitely missed that step, I'll be more careful next time.

Have a nice day!
