piper gaming mouse manager is not executing multi-key macros

I use piper to configure my MMO gaming mouse. it's a logitech. it is listed in the Arch wiki as being supported by piper.

everything works fine when assigning single keystrokes to buttons. when I configure a button to execute a two-key command (I use i3 and am aiming for things like $mod+q to quit), the mouse fails to prepend the alphabetic key with the $mod (windows key). for instance a button is configured to quit a window with $mod+q. if I have alacritty open and focused, there is simply a letter "q" being input to the terminal.

is there anyway to tweak this, or rather use different software to accomplish this?

the mouse is a logitech G600.
