[Solved] Unable to join libera.chat server in Konversation

I'm new to IRC and when I tried to join libera.chat, my connection would be closed soon.

I use Konversation as my IRC client and below is the log.

[13:37:11] [Info] Looking for server irc.ea.libera.chat (port 6697)...
[13:37:12] [Info] Server found, connecting...

[13:37:18] [Notice] -cobalt.libera.chat- *** No Ident response

[13:37:18] [Info] Requesting capabilities: account-notify away-notify chghost extended-join multi-prefix cap-notify
[13:37:18] [Info] Closing capabilities negotiation.
[13:37:19] [Error] Connection to server irc.ea.libera.chat (port 6697) lost: The TLS/SSL connection has been closed.

I noticed wiki said I should register before joining into the channel, but I seemed unable to connect to the server?

Re: [Solved] Unable to join libera.chat server in Konversation

The registration requirement mentioned by the wiki is not to blame here.⁽¹⁾ It would prevent you from joining a channel, while in this case you don’t even get a chance to finish connecting to the IRC network.

If possible, try using Libera.chat web client. This link should set the right channel already, but make sure the “channel” field contains “#libera” and press “Start” (screenshot). The nickname is unimportant. This should let you join Libera’s support channel, where you can ask for help. Simply describe the situation quickly, mentioning the “[Error] Connection to server irc.ea.libera.chat (port 6697) lost: The TLS/SSL connection has been closed.” line.

Any person with ‘@’ before their nick is Libera’s staff member.⁽²⁾ You do not need to ask them, because many other people will try to help, but those are the ones you can trust and have better view on the situation.

In case you can’t connect even over that, report back here. Perhaps you are in an IP address range that is blocked.
____
⁽¹⁾ Registration may still be required, but for other reasons. #libera will explain that in detail if needed.
⁽²⁾ Strictly speaking ‘@’ marks channel operators, but on #libera only staffers have that status.

I tried the web client and got an unknown error.

We couldn't connect to that server :(
Unknown error

I have done more tests and now I am convinced that this problem is due to Internet restrictions in China. More specifically, it should be TCP reset attacks.

Thank you for patient explanation and help!

Re: [Solved] Unable to join libera.chat server in Konversation

Does that also happen if you use the default addres (irc.libera.chat) in Konversation? Libera offers multiple addresses. If you can, then it would be possible to at least create an account and then connect to Libera over Tor or some VPN.

Re: [Solved] Unable to join libera.chat server in Konversation

I tried default address(irc.libera.chat) and East Asia address(irc.ea.libera.chat), both are blocked from China.
Finally I successfully connected to libera.chat with VPN and saw your C++ joke in #archlinux-offtopic.
Thank you very much for your help!

Hello, jimery, welcome to the forum. This is a thread over 2 years old and therefore it is unlikely any trouble you experience are what yurzhang described. So don’t attach such messages to old discussions.

Even ignoring the time that has passed: the issue they described is due to the communication censorship, not to the client being used. So the response is also wrong and misleading to anybody, who comes across this topic later.
