Hi all,
(incipit)
I'm a happy user of Arch , installed it on all my pc (desktop , laptop , VM on NAS). When I can, I also provide to help friends to install it on their machine.
Despite this satisfaction , my bad, I have to use winzoz for some software that doesn't run in linux (as photographer there are many of them).
(/incipit)
Under linux I discovered Icecat browser . Selected and forked from Firefox (146m from google will not bring good stuff) it promote a better privacy structure.
Now, some time ago there was a guy , "Muslayev" , that maintained the porting of this browser for the Windows OS. But from one day to an other , he is disappeared from the net with all his projects.
So I tried to follow some "how to" using CGYWIN https://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/cygwin-x-faq.html but the compiling hang complaining the is missing the "rename" executable in the libraries. The rename needed is the one written in Py and not the one in C++ in the linux pack provided in the cgywin libraries. I tried to add the executable in the bin folder but the complaining still persist.
So I thought that maybe under the linux system would be easier , using mingw-64 https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/MinGW_ … guidelines. Buuuut ... the learning curve is too high for me now.
In the Chaotic mirror Icecat is already compiled (I use it) . https://archlinux.pkgs.org/rolling/chao … r.zst.html
Compiling from AUR has given always errors. (so I didn't have much choice)
I read also that back a browser there is a lots and chose the right one is not a simple task.
They are tons:
https://divestos.org/index.php?page=browsers
And they have also security functions that not always are well described:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compariso … b_browsers
I read that Icecat suffer of late update and could have security holes. Is this true ?
The source used in the AUR pack come with two patch (maybe I'm wrong) . How can be cross compiled sources that come patched during the installation?
I'm a little disoriented.
What browser do you use that is not affiliated to any big company ?
Is really that difficult cross compiling this browser ?
Is worth the effort ?
Thanks for your suggestions and support , as always.
