My terminal and file manager open in /opt instead of $HOME

I have no idea how this happened, but since a few moments ago when I go to open my terminal or my file manager, it opens to a default location of /opt instead of my home directory $HOME. How do I change this back? I learn this is a default working directory, which I still don't know how to change

Re: My terminal and file manager open in /opt instead of $HOME

They'll probably use the $PWD of the shell they're started from (so likely your desktop environment) which is why you want to tell us
a) what that is and
b) how you start it and
c) what your xinitrc looks like in case that's how you start it.
