Xorg freezes on Intel Iris Xe - Thinkpad X1 Gen 10

I just received a brand new Thinkpad X1 Gen 10 with Iris Xe integrated graphics. I'm running bspwm on X, but occasionally the entire X server freezes for anywhere between 15-60 seconds, and then resumes normally. I'm using the mesa package, and when I try installing the xf86-video-intel drivers the UI isn't usable at all. Windows will open but freeze immediately. The X server then needs to be killed and xf86-video-intel needs to be removed before starting X again.

As an aside, the default screen resolution is too high. When I try lowering it with:

xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 2560x1600

the returned output is:

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

I'm guessing these issues are probably related. Can anyone help me diagnose and fix?
