I have been trying my best to make the Knights chess game run completely silent. Running Knights in the plasma desktop, and selecting GNU chess as the opponent (Settings-Knights->Computer engines) and unchecking the 'Play Sounds' option in Settings->Knights->Options, every time the computer does a move it is announced in a generated voice, despite selecting sound off.
Does anyone know if it is possible to turn sounds off fully in that game? If so how (other than turning sound off completely in the desktop, which I don't wish to do).

If it's using PulseAudio it should appear in 'pavucontrol' where you could silence it individually.
If not, try to install pipewire, pipewire-alsa, pipewire-pulse and wireplumber. Reboot and the app should appear in pavucontrol then.

I already had changed over to pipewire and wireplumber quite a while back - and I ran knights again, and then ran pavucontrol - but I can't see where there is an individual control for sound from knights (or gnuchess)
Edit: Looking on the plasma panel there is a 'Speaker' icon - which when clicked does give access to the individual control for sound level for knights - so thank you - your post prompted me to look at the general sound control panel icons and that led to the solution.
