chapter & section numbers blinking red

Since a few minutes all chapter, section and paragraph numbers are blinking red.

This weird behavior is present in firefox & falkon .

About 2 hours ago everything was normal and I have not run any updates since then.

Is something wrong with the wiki ?

Re: chapter & section numbers blinking red

I find the blinking very annoying and wonder how it will impact people senstive to bright flashings things.

Is there a chance this will be reverted ?

Not sure I understand why that is intended. Can you please explain the purpose of "animation: NAME-YOUR-ANIMATION 1s infinite;"?

In any case, this is very annoying. Can it be turned off somehow?

There are currently some tests being done in the wiki. Don't worry, we will get bored eventually. For the record: I just requested bananas to be added so it matches the IRC channel look and feel.

Thanks for the explanation. I will wait for the tests to finish.

For some context, this is related to the improvement requested at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Help_t … of_headers

So, this would be a demonstration of a way not to do it?

That is an unprofessional response*.  I'd like to assume we are not aware of some relevant information on why this is being done ... I'd really like to.  But to hear that our wiki staff is making ridiculous and obnoxious style changes to our community reference material for shits and giggles, or because they are bored is really not appropriate.

As for using 6 header levels in a wiki article, note that refactoring is not just for code.  While there are stylistic differences, I'm pretty sure there's no ambiguity in whether nesting 6 levels deep is ever called for ... especially in a content format with hyperlinks.  Trying to decorate an article with 6 levels of headings in order to make it "more readable" is just varnishing a turd.  In written documents even of book / dissertation length, widely used style formats only have 5 heading levels, and using more than the first 3 is quite rare (e.g., APA or MLA).

*edit: unless I missed some sarcasm or context - but that's not really possible to infer from just a few posts of forum history.

Re: chapter & section numbers blinking red

The style changes are there to visually separate the heading level number from the section title. Without it, it looks like the number is part of the section title.

Only 5 levels (the h2 to h6) are available to writers, since the h1 level is for the page title. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Help:S … n_headings and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Help:E … of_headers.

You are more than welcome to help reshape the rare pages where all five of them are used.

Re: chapter & section numbers blinking red

That's still 6 levels, the title is #1 - just as it is in the other format styles mentioned.

Language...    Although your point is a good one.   Surely this would have been a great time to spin up a test server and confirm backups are working.

Messing with the backups would be as unprofessional as tinkering with the productive system.

You can test wiki wide CSS in your custom user CSS. It's kinda funny though. My guess is somebody is a little drunk, lol.

Re: chapter & section numbers blinking red

A specifier unique to a test page could also have been used even with the css published "in the wild".  Article page's body elements have page-<TITLE> and rootpage-<TITLE> in their class list which could be used in the css so it only applied to select testing pages.  Given that there were just so many viable options for a sane test, I'd say "drunk" would be far beyond generous in the characterization.  What's really baffling is that there are multiple people with access who have been active here and yet nothing has been reverted.

Re: chapter & section numbers blinking red

Great, now there's a banana on it.
The change is marked as `(nl6720 asked me to make it blink)`.

nl6720 really needs to be ousted out of admin'ing the wiki.
It's such a good resource but they seem intent on making it worse for everybody.

First we moved to this new dogshit theme that has everything take up like 10% of the screen and made large code blocks impossible to read.
Now we have blinking titles and bananas everywhere...
Great!

That one came from upstream MediaWiki developers.  It's pretty embarrasing in my view that they couldn't properly add a media query for mobile devices which is what that theme was for, but just the same, that's on upstream, not our wiki team.  The blinking and bananas, however, fall squarely on the arch wiki team.

The question remains: will banana arch installs qualify for official support?

The banana munching monkey is presently only in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p2056789 (I'll maybe refine and add it to the main post if this becomes a long-term necessity)

The bananas apparently meanwhile started to rot, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php?ti … did=745646
