Computer freezes and plays audio in loop

Hello,

My computer has been crashing lately and when it does so, it plays some form of audio buffer in a loop. This happens about once or twice a day and has been getting worse lately. I've searched for this issue a bunch and found numerous people with similar problems. It seems to be hardware related, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what hardware needs to be replaced. So here's what I have:

  • 32 GB of RAM (24000 mhz) + 8GB swap file

  • AMD Ryzen 3700X

  • AMD RX 3700-XT

  • TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) motherboard

I have Only recently replaced the GPU and these errors persisted with my previous GPU as well, so I doubt that is the problem. This leaves the CPU, RAM, motherboard, or SSD. Here's what I did to test each one:

  • RAM: Since the RAM is quite old, I tested that first with memtest86. I ran each stick through 2 passes, and then the set of 4 sticks through 12 passes. At that point, it was running for over 16 hours, without a problem and seeing as how this problem comes up a few times a day, I decided to test other problems.

  • CPU: I then replaced the thermal paste on my CPU. When I did so, I just double-checked to make sure there weren't any bent pins. After, I used stress-ng for about 30 minutes to check the thermal temperatures. Everything seemed normal (It got up to 85, which might be a little concerning, but I read that it should still be acceptable).

  • SSD: After all this, I also tested my SSD with smartctl and it seemed to pass with no issues.

  • GPU: I then decided "the issue must be my GPU. I run it pretty hard with GPGPU tests for work." After replacing the GPU, I can confidently say that my computer still crashes in this way. It just now has booting problems as well...

So now I'm lost. Could it be an issue with the motherboard? Is there some Ryzen-specific UEFI setting I should know about that I failed to set correctly? Could this be a software issue? I ruled that out early seeing as how Windows users are reporting similar errors.

Should I just replace my RAM anyway? I mean, it's 8 years old now. It's just that if I replace the RAM and my computer is still crashing, I'm gonna be a bit frustrated.

I tried going through journalctl after each one of these crashes and can never seem to find anything worthwhile, but I don't really know what to look for.

Again, kinda at a loss here, so any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

EDIT: I saw some notes that it might be a specific interaction between my motherboard and the 3700. I updated the BIOS and hope this fixes things. I will update when it happens again.

Re: Computer freezes and plays audio in loop

Could it be that the PSU (power supply) is not supplying enough power?
