I'd really like to make my desktop GTK1-free, but unfortunetally kdeutils require xmms (why) and xmms requires gtk... But what KDE user would use xmms??
Well, gtk is also required by imlib which is required by kdegraphics ... is this neccesseary?
I also hate that a lot of packages depend on esd... but I guess I can live with that... although esd is so.. so.. '80s .. so obsolete.
What do you think?

The kde packages contains a lot of apps/libs so there's probably an app or tool that needs those dependencies.

If you don't use the app in question, you can always remove the dependencies using pacman -Rd.

This is not a solution, because user must first install packages before doing pacman -Rd.
Installing kde with --ignore xmms might help, but on every pacman -Syu Pacman will want to downolad xmms and gtk1 again. And IgnorePkg option in pacman.conf doesn't help too, because it ignores listed packages during upgrade, not during first install.

Even though i can understand the reasoning behind this (why should a kde desktop contain even a single gtk dependency), i still don't think it's worth all this attention by itself, because of several reasons.
1. the kde desktop is built the way it is ATM. Straight from kde.org, no patches, just vanilla.
2. gtk1 is just a (rather small) library. You probably have hundreds of other not commonly used libs in your installation.
3. kde4 is coming. That will probably break the old ties.

Yes, current KDE packages in Arch are too bloated with dependencies, but it's because they are vanilla. There is some unofficial repo with splitted KDE packages (not all yet), but I doubt current KDE packages will be splitted in main Arch repos (because it's hard and devs don't have time and motivation for it).
IIRC KDE4 will have much improved packages, maybe totally splitted, but this won't happen until some RC, which AFAIK will be not soon.

BTW, it's offtopic a bit, but Gentoo even dicided to remove XMMS completely. ![]()
