[SOLVED] Frequent system freezes (kernel panic?) after latest update

Hi,

after the latest update (last night), I'm experiencing frequent complete system freezes ... the laptop doesn't
accept any input, can't change to TTY, and caps lock starts blinking.

My laptop is a Lenovo Flex 5 Intel (11th gen I7) 14ITL05.

uname -a says:

 Linux nichi 5.19.4-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed, 03 Aug 2022 11:25:04 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

(tried with 5.18.16 as well, still seems to happen).

Anybody else experiencing this ? Any hints ?

Best,
N

What's your desktop environment? GNOME? KDE?

And are you login by display manager?

Not using a desktop environment, logging in to tty and starting the WM with startx.

WM is this one: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/bubbles-git

Re: [SOLVED] Frequent system freezes (kernel panic?) after latest update

You could try another WM that using x11 protocol. Then see if it still has the same problem.

Could be the same issue as this one: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p2054178

Not sure, even though in my case it's not just while the device is idle, but basically any given moment while actively using it ...

You can try the patched kernel in the linked post to find out if it's the same issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Frequent system freezes (kernel panic?) after latest update

Hmm I haven't tried the patched kernel, but I downgraded to an older version of the regular kernel (where I'm 100% sure there wasn't a problem when that was the latest one), and
the problem still happens ... in fact, I've tried with several versions, and none of them change anything.

So maybe it's not the kernel at all ?

Re: [SOLVED] Frequent system freezes (kernel panic?) after latest update

Another strange thing that happened:

The system froze while I was typing, and before it froze completely (flashing capslock), the last letter was repeated as if I was holding down the key ...

Just built my own patched kernel which reverts the commit mentioned in the post, based on the latest (upcoming) arch kernel.

Uptime so far 1h 15min, no freezes ... so maybe that was the issue ?

Re: [SOLVED] Frequent system freezes (kernel panic?) after latest update

And the exact same kernel without the revert had the usual freezes?

Did your dmesg every show anything helpful? The kernel panic itself is probably not in there, but for me lots of these happened all the time:

[ 215.699131] BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000
[ 215.699152] #PF: supervisor instruction fetch in kernel mode
[ 215.699166] #PF: error_code(0x0010) - not-present page
[ 215.699178] PGD 0 P4D 0
[ 215.699185] Oops: 0010 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI

until at some point the whole system froze.

Another idea, since the issue I had is related to USB C, is verifying that your setup has not changed regarding USB including Docking Stations.

If the crashes still occur, you could also try setting up Kdump to capture the actual panics: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump

Hmm ok I have to take that back ... it freezes less frequently, but still happens

Re: [SOLVED] Frequent system freezes (kernel panic?) after latest update

Didn't really have time to verify whether it was the (exact) problem mentioned above, even though reverting that commit did make the problem less frequent.

Be that as it may, the problem stopped occurring with the last 2 kernel updates. Currently on unmodified 5.19.9-arch1-1 ... no freezes for the last 1.5 weeks or so ...

Best,
N
