Arch freezes, screen turns off (when a GIF is rendered in localhost?)

Hi everyone, I'm glad to be here in this community. i'm pretty new to Arch but I already faced several issues. Each time is a challenge and a pleasure to fix them and learn new stuffs

This time I don't really know what to do, I have some suspects but not much infos, so that I decided to join the forum!

Basically, each time I reach some amount of ram, the device's screen turns off and I cant do anything but force the shutdown. Not sure if the trigger is the ram or something else kind of  the display protocol/driver video/idunno.

I'm not sure what to look for in the journalctl. Yesterday I was testing some animations in a dev server in localhost and it happened every 10 minutes (some infinite animations with a SSR web framwerok). Actually also while watching a gif with gnview. Today I actually just turned the machine on and surfed the web and nothing like that happened. If it's not something related to driver video could be something about ram cause it also happened while managing very big datasets in a jupyter notebook, with numpy/pandas operations.

I can't go on like this, forcing the shutdown every 10 minutes. The machine is new, bought it 2 months ago. It's a dual boot with win11. I installed Arch following some guides on youtube and suggestions from asus-linux.org. Everything works fine, except for this "little" problem and I can't
even mange to install bluetooth drivers.

Here's my neofetch:

OS: Arch Linux x86_64

Hope to figure it out what is missing/misconfigured in my system

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Stress … MemTest86+
You'll have to let this run for a long time (half a day at least) for somewhat reliable results (except if it starts yelling errors at you immediately, of course)

Also please post the output of "dmidecode".

I can't go on like this, forcing the shutdown every 10 minutes.

Please edit your post and wrap the output in "code" tags, thanks.

The RAM config itself looks unproblematic (no mix of different DIMMs, so if it's the RAM it's either overclocked or defective.

Could be something about the Compositor ? I remember it also happened several times while trying to set up correctly the blur of windows in the os

What kind of checks could I do about compositor ?

Re: Arch freezes, screen turns off (when a GIF is rendered in localhost?)

Suspend it (SHIFT+Alt+F12) and see whether you can still trigger the problem.
To be clear: your RAM is not off the hook  just because it's not a wonky configuration.

Ok, I'm going to stress test the system using the tool you suggested and I will let you know asap smile

Just a last question, what could I look for in the journalctl if it happens again ?

Re: Arch freezes, screen turns off (when a GIF is rendered in localhost?)

[SOLVED] I am going to tack on to this thread because our situations sound similar enough and we have some similarities in hardware. I have been running this setup for a few months without issues, this just started happening to me.

OS: Arch Linux x86_64
Host: X570S AERO G -CF
Kernel: 5.19.9-zen1-1-zen
Shell: zsh 5.9
Resolution: 5120x2160
WM: awesome
terminal: kitty
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (32) @ 3.400GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 6950 XT
Memory: 3374MiB / 31991MiB

Over the last few weeks both of my monitors have been shutting off at the same time. At first I thought it was just my monitors going to sleep and that my bluetooth mouse and keyboard couldn't wake them back up. I would restart my system and go about my day. Now I feel like the issue is accelerating and happening more and more. I have had it also do the blanking out when I am at my display manager trying to log in, or even in the middle of coding. If I had music playing it will continue to play but I can't get anything to show on screen, and I feel like the xorg session is gone because none of my hotkeys to restart the system work. Even more frustrating and wild to me is that sometimes when I hard reboot the machine the monitors stay black and I have to force restart a few times before I see my mobo screen and then grub.

Looking into journalctl has given me some errors but I couldn't find any leads on how to fix them or feel confidently they are the issue that is causing all this. Doing

journalctl --boot=-1 --reverse --system

gives me these errors pretty close to the top.

What I have tried

Switching to wired mouse and keyboard
Resetting Monitor to factory settings
Using different cable same input (Display Port)
Using different input (HDMI)
Switching to regular kernel (I normally use zen)
Booting into a wayland compositor (normally use xorg, awesomewm, and picom)
Disabling bluetooth and Wifi
Disabling XMP profiles on my motherboard
Turning of screen blanking and dpms through xorg
Installing mesa-git instead of mesa
Booting into windows and running the machine for a few hours to see if it did the same thing - it didn't

Any help would be much appreciated. I have been working off of a old mac mini the last 2 days and been miserable without my main machine.

Solved: After taking my whole system apart I tried putting the original power supply cables back in rather than the custom ones I was using. Seems to be working fine now.

Re: Arch freezes, screen turns off (when a GIF is rendered in localhost?)

Just a last question, what could I look for in the journalctl if it happens again ?

If you (have t) hard reboot the system, the journal won't be sync'd to disk and contain nothing about the freeze.
You'll have to use at least https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SysRq to sync and unmount the filesystems before the reboot.

For ryzen see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen#Troubleshooting

@orlandocollins

--reverse

Please don't, that's like top-quoting in mails.

Sep 22 00:36:39 trinity kernel: snd_hda_intel 0000:0e:00.1: Unable to change power state from D3hot to D0, device inaccessible

There's certainly an issue waking the GPU =>

amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0 pci_aspm=0

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters

Can you btw. still switch the VT (ctrl+alt+F1,2,3,…) when this happens?

It's my same guess, there's something strange happening between XORG and the GPU. Personally I can't switch to virtual terminal, that was the first thing I tried to do but nothing happened.

Thanks to Orlando to join this 3d, the situation sounds very similar for real. I think we have the same problem under the hood.

Yeah same symptoms, except that I couldn't let the blueetoth work at all. In my case when I force restart it's frustrating cause I have to keep the power button pressed for  30 seconds to discharge electrons, otherwise often when I turn on again the wifi card is not found.

Can you btw. still switch the VT (ctrl+alt+F1,2,3,…) when this happens?

Not sure, my monitors completely disconnect and show the message that no output is detected.

I tried getting to a tty and running reboot to see if input was still going through but I couldn't get the system to respond to anything I typed.

Looking into the

snd_hda_intel

messages now.

Re: Arch freezes, screen turns off (when a GIF is rendered in localhost?)

One new development for me. I was in a voice chat and the issue popped up. I was able to still hear who I was talking to and they could hear me, but my monitor turned off. Journal is flooded with this message

[drm:amdgpu_cs_ioctl [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Failed to initialize parser -125!

Thanks. Good to know that there is someone else sharing my misery.

I also don't want to hijack your original thread if our issues have diverged. Are you seeing similar issues in your journal or are there differences?

Re: Arch freezes, screen turns off (when a GIF is rendered in localhost?)

@joeleonard212, the xorg.1.log is from august 29th (>3 weeks ago) and ran on the AMD GPU
The Xorg.0.log "log" isn't a log but looks like a failed attempt to run Xorg from with an Xorg session?

@orlandocollins, please don't bump - edit your previous post if nobody has replied so far.
Did you try the kernel parameters in #9 ?

Ok but those are the most recent log files I have within /.local/share/xorg/

EDIT: It just happened again and I was doing nothing but scrolling pinterest (a page full of jpg, png and gifs). Definitely is something in the browser triggering it when visualizing several gifs at once. I use Vivaldi browser

Do you start the session w/ xinit or startx or do you use some DM?

Re: Arch freezes, screen turns off (when a GIF is rendered in localhost?)

Please don't embed huge images (250x250 max) - you can use the re-enbale button and certainly look at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump
Both: whether kwin frequently crashes (what might explain the symptoms) and what exactly.

You're currently running X11 on the AMD gpu and the modesetting driver - you may also give https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … eo-amdgpu/ a try.
