WiFi interface won't show up

Hello everyone,

I installed Arch a couple of days ago using the install script as a headless server. Everything except the wifi interface works. the driver seems to be loaded but there just is no interface.

System basics:

> uname -a
Linux doctor6 5.19.11-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sat, 24 Sep 2022 18:24:15 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Why do I believe the driver is loaded?

> lspci -k
...
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 (rev 78)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265
        Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
        Kernel modules: iwlwifi

> dmesg | grep iwlwifi
[    1.823846] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[ 1.860818] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: loaded firmware version 36.ca7b901d.0 8265-36.ucode op_mode iwlmvm

There is no interface however to turn on or use in any way.

> ip link show

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: enp0s31f6: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 6c:4b:90:3f:c3:44 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

Why the driver might sill not be loaded or at least not working properly:

> rfkill list all

0: hci0: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

Shouldn't the wifi card show up here (blocked or not)?

What I tried so far:

  • Rebooting

  • Reinstalling the "linux-firmware" package

  • Googling for similar problems. There the driver was always missing.

Additional info:
Before I switched to Arch I used debian on the same machine. I can remember that wifi din't work there out of the box either. I had to install a package, but - the documentation ace that I am - I didn't took a not on which one it was.

Re: WiFi interface won't show up

Please post a complete system journal (sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st) and if you're using iwd, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd#Re … after_boot

Re: WiFi interface won't show up

By any chance, do you dual boot with windows? (And use "fastboot")

Re: WiFi interface won't show up

@seth: The output was surprisingly sparse:

> sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
[sudo] Passwort für grindel:
http://0x0.st/o4jM.txt

[EDIT:] iwd is not in use.

@Trillby: No, not on this machine. On my laptop I do and there the wifi card is the same model. However I'm using Manjaro there and not arch.

Re: WiFi interface won't show up

Some more info. I checked wether WIFI was disabled in Bios - which it wasn't. Also I did never actually configure a network myself but had the installation script copy the live session settings - which were ethernet only.

Re: WiFi interface won't show up

The "Detected Intel(R) Wi-Fi ..." message is missing so https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/ … ps.c#L1288 is never reached

Re: WiFi interface won't show up

Very simple test: try the LTS kernel
If that doesn't work either, get rid of the "ip=:::::eth0:dhcp" parameter, I'm not sure whether that will trigger some exclusive handling that denies all other NICs.

Re: WiFi interface won't show up

@seth: I will try this as soon as possible. I actually do have an ip-parameter in my systemd-loader configuration. The network should be established so I can enter my encryption password via ssh. How did you figure that out?

Re: WiFi interface won't show up

http://0x0.st/o4jM.txt has your system journal, the journal has the kernel commandline, profit smile
