[SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

Hello.

Since few months ago, I noticed a serious problem that keeps happening each time I'm using a Qt-based program ; in simple words, when I open a file browsing subwindow, this one is very low and keeps lagging until I'm forced to kill the whole process. Also, during this lag, it doesn't render properly, here's an example at the window creation time: https://i.imgur.com/5MIVEsy.png
I didn't notice any debug message in the terminal when using it to launch the program, so I guess it's a performance problem. That's really frustrating because it means there's many Qt programs I can't use properly without getting this damn lag.

My kernel and my whole distro are obviously up-to-date, I hoped the updates released after first time I notice this problem would solve it, but I hoped too much.

Can you write more about your hardware and desktop setup (Xserver or Wayland, what DE)?

And what hardware: Intel or AMD CPU, what graphic card? Post output of 'lspci -nnk' .

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

Is it just with Qt windows? Which Qt applications are you running? Is there a specific application you might have opened that triggers this because it e.g. uses a custom Qt version? I remember seeing this issue in that form primarily with older versions of octave for example. Where octave would register itself in a way that blocked all other QtFileDialogs

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/qarma-git

qarma --file-selection --filename=/tmp/

Slow as well?
Does the path (--filename) matter?

strace -t -o /tmp/qarma.strace qarma --file-selection --filename=/tmp/

might help to figure where it's hanging around.

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

@V1del => Yep. Any Qt program using QFileDialog, but in my case, mostly Qt Creator.

@seth => Nope, qarma perfectly works, but Qt Creator still uses zenity when executed.

Probably not zenity, but what about

QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=gnarf qtcreator

Same problem happens. I don't see any change, like if it didn't do anything.
By the way, strace's result: https://mega.nz/file/u58znRDK#GTak2o85g … ksIMW_Q1SQ

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

What makes you believe that "Qt Creator still uses zenity", does it distinctly look like a GTK dialog?
What desktop environment is this?
What happens in eg. an openbox session?

Did you test qarma w/ different filenames/paths (in particular "~/", I guess)?

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

I maybe pushed it too far saying it was zenity ; when I use zenity and qarma as standalones with the --file-selection argument, the file selection subwindow is perfectly working and doesn't look like Qt Creator's one.
Here's what I got with these standalones, and also, another lot of Qt programs I'm using : https://i.imgur.com/Nxd02NY.png
Now compared with the first subwdw, that can't even render itself, this one is way better.

As said higher, I'm using KDE Plasma.

What happens in eg. an openbox session?

Did you compile qarma against qt5 or qt6?

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

The openbox session doesn't solve anything, same program, same subwindow, same issue.
Not sure to understand what you mean by "build against Qt5 or 6"...

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

So Qt5 - since https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/qtcreator/ uses Qt6 this might be the relevant difference.

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

Tried reinstalling Qt Creator from official repos, but it unsurprisingly didn't work. I'm trying to compile it from source code, hoping to get the correct base, I'll give news about it later.

Hold on - what version do you currently have installed and why and how does installing it from the repos "not work"?

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

Before this post, I had the official binaries downloaded from Arch Linux repos, nothing special, and I actually decided to install the github package in the (a bit blind, I must admit it) hope to get a Qt6-based version.
Just finished to compile the source code, and the problem is still here.

The repo version of qtcreator alread is Qt6, but you compiled qarma against Qt5.
My suspicion was/is that actually Qt6 causes this trouble for you.

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

So should I compile qarma or zenity AUR packages again? (I don't know the Qt environment, sorry if my questions looks dumb)

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

qarma, but you'll have to edit the PKGBUILD and replace "qt5" w/ "qt6" (notably for qmake-qt6)

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

Here's the PKGBUILD code I edited in order to compile it with the correct dependencies. I didn't find anything like "qmake-qt6" so I considered "qmake" to be up-to-date by default ; same for x11extras for which there's non-qt5 equivalent.

pkgname=qarma-git
pkgver=85.6ee1a72
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="A drop-in replacement clone for zenity, written in Qt, Qt5 build"
arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
url="https://github.com/luebking/qarma"
license=('GPL')
depends=('qt6-base' 'qt5-x11extras')
makedepends=('git')
provides=('qarma' 'zenity')
conflicts=('qarma' 'zenity')
source=("git+https://github.com/luebking/qarma")
md5sums=("SKIP")

pkgver() {
    cd "${srcdir}/${pkgname/-git/}"
    printf "%s.%s" "$(git rev-list --count HEAD)" "$(git rev-parse --short HEAD)"
}

build() {
    cd "${srcdir}/${pkgname/-git/}"
    qmake
    make
}

package() {
    cd "${srcdir}/${pkgname/-git/}"
    install -Dm755 qarma -t "$pkgdir/usr/bin"
    ln -s /usr/bin/qarma "$pkgdir/usr/bin/qarma-askpass"
    ln -s /usr/bin/qarma "$pkgdir/usr/bin/zenity"
}

It still didn't work, so I uninstalled everything including zenity and qarma packages (and also the Steam client btw...) before trying to install the package manually with "sudo pacman -F" (not sure if it was to install packages directly, I'm not familiar with these practices). It failed, so I've taken profit of all these packages being uninstalled to open QtC for a new try. The issue still happened, so at this point I just think it's integrated to the IDE binaries. Also, I just noticed from the AUR package info that qarma and zenity aren't part, or at least dependencies, of Qt Creator. Your opinion?

Re: [SOLVED] Qt Creator's file selection subwindow is sluggish as hell

Also, I thought it would be useful to use "strace" on Qt Creator whileas running it. Here is what I got: https://mega.nz/file/HwlRzJDY#V22hfRBcU … ujTHXjuG7w

It seems like the subwindow is struggling for a lot of icons, but I'm no expert at all.
