Auto off display from console (vbetool of no help)

So I have a host with Arch which is used in console mode only (no display manager, no X11 or Wayland). After logging out, I would like the monitor to automatically switch off after some time. It's no problem to achieve that under X11 (xset, etc.) or probably even with display manager, but I don't need that. The only relevant thing I found is vbetool, but

sudo vbetool dpms off

is just ignored on this host (no errors, no warnings, nothing).

Any other options I might have overlooked?
