kernel panic immediately following install

i tried to do an ftp install into a vmware instance today.
*makes explosion sounds*

I tried with a "scsi disk", failed.
I tried to install using an "ide disk" just to make sure I wasn't on crack. failed.
tried the fallback initrd after install...same results.

The install went fine. No apparent errors. Then reboot...

kernel starts to load... then there is a message
"Checking if this processor honours the WP bit even in supervisor mode... Ok"

It seems to take a few seconds after that log message.. for the boot to proceed again. Spelling honor with a u must take extra long..

After that, a few more messages scroll by.. then there is a nice kernel panic.
looked like a good one.. so I took a screencap.

A picture is worth a thousand words..

Any ideas? Is there something funky with the new kernel?
I swore I did this just a few days ago, and had no problems....

I don't have this problem with any of my VMware machines, all of them have 2.6.18 kernel. Haven't tried the latest 2.6.18.2 yet.
