fingerprint-gui usb permission problem

I'm following the wiki page at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fingerprint_GUI. After starting the fingerprint-gui application (from a terminal), selecting the device "Elan Microelectronics Corp. (0x4f3) unknown device (0xc26)", the driver "elan" and my preferred finger, I get an error stating: "Could not open fingerprint device. Permission problem?"

At that point, the terminal window shows

(process:30267): libfprint-async-WARNING **: 15:19:39.037: usb_open failed, error -3

Indeed, when I run fingerprint-gui with elevated rights, it does let me scan my finger, so the message might be right. I did add my user to the plugdev group as suggested (and re-logged in). Can someone tell me what I'm missing here?

Many thanks for any help.
