Can't reach Servers

Hello, I'm new to this forum. And I don't exactly know whether to post here or in "Networking & Security"?!

I'm using Linux quite a long time. I used Debian Sid on both my Computers.
But now I changed my working one to Arch Linux! It's a Samsung X5 notebook (centrino).
I installed with the updatet 0.5 installation tutorial...
Everything went well and _fast_ till this:
I want to update pacman but I can't reach the Servers. The connection to my gateway/router Debian box works fine but I can't reach my nameservers (217.5.115.7 and 192.25.7.129) with a ping.
But, I can ping IP's on the net like 194.25.7.129.. that works..
Where in hell is the problem? What's my fault?
For now, I will try to take the IPs and not the name for getting the rest of my system.
Hope you can help me.

Thanks in advance,

Johannes

Re: Can't reach Servers

Hm, it works if I take the IPs rather than the domains.
Though there is conntection to the internet

Re: Can't reach Servers

There's a problem with name resolution.  Either your /etc/resolv.conf isn't right or your DNS servers are having problems.

Should I post it later? The second DNS-Server is from Telekom in Germany.
But, before I set the new system up, I have been surfing _with_ these two dns-addresses..

Re: Can't reach Servers

Well, let's narrow it down a bit.

You say you can ping IPs on your local network - this means your network card and cable work.

You can ping your gateway - which means that it's not the gateway that's down.

You can ping external IPs - which means that the gateway is routing packets properly.

Can you ping the DNS servers?  If so, what if you nslookup (or host) an address?

I just tried to understand what you'd done and made a suggestion based on that.  You have to give me more information before I can help any more than that.

Re: Can't reach Servers

I have two computers in my network.
My Notebook (192.168.0.10) with Arch 0.6 and my old one (192.168.0.1) with Debian.
The old one is my gateway into the internet.
Ping 192.168.0.1 works fine.
I can ping external ips. Trying to get my new system "bigger" I changed the names in the /etc/pacman.conf into their ips (checked from an other pc).
And *woosh*.. ok not cleary yet cause of the extra section. But I think thats my fault, cause the first entry in the "extra" section is #ed.

I hope this is what you need to help me?

Re: Can't reach Servers

lol

no need to dig that much further ...

Xentac, can you actually ping the two nameservers in question ? I don't get a response either, and am not sitting behind any NAT-box or having otherwise any configuration problems.

hehejo,. can you ping the nameservers from your Debian-gateway ? Probably not. Just try the master DNS server of T-online. Or check this list : http://www.atelier89.de/users/dirk/t-o/010.html Actually, are you with T-online in the first place ? maybe they don't allow access to their DNS servers from outside ?

Re: Can't reach Servers

*numpf*
But these nameservers worked!
As I said, I surfed a minute before installing Arch..
Cause of this I don't know why it doesn't work _now_.

Thanks for the link. I will test them immediatelly when I'm at home.
