variety-screensaver package - where is it?

The "variety" desktop image-changer package is available for install, but the "variety-screensaver" companion package appears to be missing.  Where can it be found or installed?

I tried to install the deb binary via debtap, but there are too many Ubuntu dependencies to succeed.

Thank you.

Re: variety-screensaver package - where is it?

Welcome to the forums.

It doesn't appear to be available in the repos or AUR. You could write a PKGBUILD yourself or you could post a request in the AUR section of the forums.

And what do you expect to be in that package?

Probably https://github.com/peterlevi/variety-slideshow - doesn't seem packaged in repo or AUR
xscreesaver has glslideshow which provides the same funcitonality

Re: variety-screensaver package - where is it?

Thank you Seth and Cfr,

I started with glslideshow and the XFCE screensaver, but neither display images in name or date sequence.  Variety-screensaver provides an option to display images in sequence.

The XFCE screensaver provides an option to "randomize" the images, but deselecting it does not result in images displayed in sequence.

Why would AUR include "variety" but not its companion "variety-screensaver"?

Thanks again,

PAX

Because somebody has decided to package variety but nobody has decided to package variety-screensaver. Variety is in community - not AUR - but the reason is the same.

If you mean, 'why did somebody package variety without packaging variety-screensaver?', you'd have to ask whoever packaged variety. But somebody might well want to use variety without wanting to use variety-screensaver. As far as I can tell, variety can be used independently of variety-screensaver. Somebody (like me) might not use a screensaver at all, so might have no use for a screensaver of any kind. But this is all pure speculation.

If you want to use variety-screensaver, write a PKGBUILD and consider submitting it to AUR.

And I still haven't seen anything called variety-screensaver, so again, what are you wanting packaged exactly? We need links.

I'm assuming https://github.com/peterlevi/variety-slideshow, but it took a little poking around.

Yes.  Also found here:  https://peterlevi.com/variety/2016/02/0 … slideshow/

And sourced here:  https://launchpad.net/~peterlevi/+archi … /+packages

I asked why "variety-screensaver" was not included in AUR while "variety" is included because both are installed together when installed from PPA.

Thanks again.

How the PPA does it has just about no correlation with how an Arch packager (official or not) does it. The maintainer of variety in [community] may or may not be aware of variety-slideshow, may not see it as necessary, etc.

Shouldn't be too hard to add variety-slideshow to the AUR, go for it.

Re: variety-screensaver package - where is it?

So you *are* looking for variety-slideshow. Why do you insist on still saying variety-screensaver? There's nothing by that name anywhere, not even in the linked PPA. Don't make people guess at what you're talking about.

Re: variety-screensaver package - where is it?

Thank you, Scimmia, for identifying the semantic paraphasia.  With apologies, it was not intentional.  Ultimately, I am looking for a slideshow screensaver that does what variety-slideshow does.  Since I had screensaver on the brain, my fingers did the rest after starting with an "s."

That said, all of the above still applies with the appropriate word correction.

Thanks again,

PAX

Re: variety-screensaver package - where is it?

Hi Seth, thank you for the suggestion.  Unfortunately, glslideshow does not provide an option to display images in sequence.

I started with glslideshow and the XFCE screensaver, but neither display images in name or date sequence.  Variety-slideshow provides an option to display images in sequence.

The XFCE screensaver provides an option to "randomize" the images, but deselecting it does not result in images displayed in sequence.

Yes, if glslideshow or the XFCE screensaver could be "fixed" to display images in sequence, that would be the preferred option.

Thanks again,

PAX
