[SOLVED] XFCE clipman does not work anymore

Clipman worked OKish for over a year and now suddenly its icon is grayed out and nothing gets copied to it (maybe only once in a blue moon for unknown reason). This is only the case with one of my users. I created new user and it all works fine there. I  tried copying config files form the new user home directory but nothing works. I'm also confused why are there two ways to add clipman to the panel: one is directly from Panel Preferences > Item > Add and another is from Settings > Session and Startup > Application Autostart (and for some reason if you add it the second way it has a different icon, probably one of them is not affected by an icon theme?) . If you try to add them both then they run into conflict and you get error messages. Is there a good reason why there should be two ways to add it? I doubt but that's another topic I guess. Anyways I have no idea what to do or how to diagnose my problem.

I don't exactly remember what happened when it broke, I remember copying something to it that broke it.

And btw I saw this thread but it didn't help: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=222262

Is the plugin inadvertently disabled? Right-click the plugin to check.

As to why there are two ways to start it, its so that it can also work on non-Xfce systems. I find adding the plugin to the panel works best in Xfce.

I feel terribly stupid now. It worked. I spent hours trying to find a responsible config file. Why didn't mv xfce4 xfce4.back from  /home/myuser/.config/  work, where's the right config stored for the panel?

The settings are stored using xfconf. The settings are stored in memory and later written to disk. The clipman history is saved in ~/.cache/xfce4. If saving/restoring xfce directories/settings make sure you are not logged into Xfce and that the xfconf process is not running (seems to have some persistence even after you log out).
