Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

Relatively fresh arch install on a new Dell XPS 9320. I have switched the storage mode to AHCI as per the wiki page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dell_X … lus_(9320)) which seems to have improved the battery life, but the laptop cannot wake from suspend, and the only way to render it usable is to force it to power off with the button and then reboot it.

I have tried both shutting the lid and systemctl suspend.

In the journal, I can see it enter suspend (s2idle) and the following are the last entries (same every time):

Nov 06 17:43:05 anaximander systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.
Nov 06 17:43:05 anaximander systemd[1]: Starting System Suspend...
Nov 06 17:43:05 anaximander systemd-sleep[12303]: Entering sleep state 'suspend'...
Nov 06 17:43:05 anaximander kernel: PM: suspend entry (s2idle)
Nov 06 17:43:05 anaximander kernel: Filesystems sync: 0.009 seconds

If I look at dmesg, I do see some weird things from this boot (have been like this since I installed arch):

and it might be relevant, but I also can't poweroff the system properly. If I do `sudo shutdown now` it goes through a whole series of messages until it gets to something about deactivating kvm virtualisation and then just hangs -- it never actually powers the machine off. These do feel like separate issues, however.

I've been looking at the guide https://01.org/blogs/qwang59/2020/linux … leshooting which I am working through, although the fact that I cannot wake my machine from sleep makes some of the steps a bit difficult to carry out.

I can see two options: continue to try to get this S0ix sleep mode to work, or disable it and just rely on S3 sleep (I think)? If anyone has encountered this and can help I'd be very grateful (I've had a series of issues with this laptop).

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

I do wonder if this has something to do with my swap partition being in a LUKS encrypted partition (managed with LVM).

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

If S3 is supported, why do you want to use s2idle particularly?

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

I’m not especially attached to s2idle, it’s more that my laptop won’t wake from suspension — I’m happy with a different level / mode. I was reading the wiki on the different suspension levels but didn’t find a way to enable / disable them (but could have missed it).

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

So is it using s2idle by default? From your first post, I thought you were trying to use that rather than S3.

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

If you look in the journal, do you have a line similar to the following?

Tach 05 20:42:09 MyComputer kernel: ACPI: PM: (supports S0 S3 S4 S5)

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep gives "[s2idle]"

I do not have a line like that in my journal, no.

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

So it is using s2idle by default, I guess, since s3 isn't available. Have you seen https://01.org/blogs/qwang59/2020/linux … leshooting?

EDIT: You might also want to update the firmware using fwupd or otherwise. Dell released version 1.9.0 a couple of days ago. That's a security update. Presumably, there was a 1.8.* in between.

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

I updated the firmware and ran a full system upgrade, and found the relevant journal line:

Nov 07 13:26:59 anaximander kernel: ACPI: PM: (supports S0 S4 S5)

Looks like S3 isn't supported but this might be a BIOS setting (guessing from the fact that this is true in the thinkpad bios https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Lenovo … anagement). I will now try suspending via

systemctl suspend

To see if the s2idle sleep works.

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

The machine entered the sleep state as before with systemctl suspend and, as before, would not leave that state so I had to force the power off. I also could not find a setting in the bios to enable S3 sleep despite there being an option to disable S3 sleep (which was off, so S3 sleep should be available).

I'll try to go through the troubleshooting guide this evening.

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

Ok, so I've looked at the troubleshooting guide, and tried the third case ("Case 3. System cannot wake up after S2idle entry"). I enabled usb wakeup for all usb devices in powertop and also attempted the rtc wakeup clock, but after echoing "freeze" to /sys/power/state the screen just hangs, it doesn't turn off at all. I waited for a full minute, tried to wake it up, nothing. Closing and opening the lid has no effect.

I'm wondering if, perhaps, it's getting stuck before it enters s2idle since the screen stayed frozen.

Output of cat /proc/acpi/wakeup:

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

I hope somebody who knows more says something soon.

Why is it showing S3 enabled for the lid and power button when S3 isn't showing up as supported, even though the UEFI suggests it should be? Does /sys/power/mem_sleep still show only s2idle available?

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

Same issues on an XPS 9315

I've reinstalled Ubuntu on a separate btrfs subvolume and it's able to properly shutdown and suspend+resume.
My Arch Linux installation usb flash (archlinux-2022.11.01-x86_64.iso) is also able to shutdown/reboot without issues.

Could you tell me what kernel versions ubuntu and your archiso are using? I have had this problem on 6.0.6 and 6.0.7.

@cfr

Does /sys/power/mem_sleep still show only s2idle available?

Yes it does:

~ > cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
[s2idle]
~ > cat /sys/power/state
freeze mem disk

I can't remember if you said whether you'd tried the lts kernel?

Nah I haven’t — the Dell XPS 9320 warns against the LTS kernel because it’s apparently glitchy

Re: Dell XPS 9320 does not wake from suspend

Ok so this is super weird — the installed version doesn’t work but the archiso one does. I wonder if there is some extra compat settings in the archiso that we could use to make our machines work properly ?

If I blacklist module ov01a10 it reboots just fine, I guess it breaks acpi

Ok, I can confirm that uninstalling all the webcam / ivsc related packages fixes the problem for me. I can now close my laptop, reopen it, and it works. I'll see if there's a minimal set of these which don't break ACPI, because, frankly, the webcam wasn't working anyway.
