Every now and then I try to give a fwupdmgr to see if it updates the firmware of any device for me. Today for the first time it offers me to upgrade UEFI but before proceeding there is this warning:
My system has Grub, is not in dual boot with win, and secure boot is disabled. I have an Asus TUF X570 for AMD. Doing a 'bootctl status' I get:
$ bootctl status
systemd-boot not installed in ESP.
System:
Firmware: n/a (n/a)
Secure Boot: disabled (disabled)
TPM2 Support: no
Boot into FW: supported
... Should this upgrade be attempted (Considering that I don't know anything about secure boot and shim...)?

I think bootctl is part of systemd and always look for systemd-boot, even if it is not present.

Does the update offer anything other than the removal of those signatures? If you are not using secure boot anyway, updating the database of signatures offers no benefit. But if the update offers other improvements, that's obviously a different story.

Thank you. I couldn't find any news about other features of the upgrade, only the removal of insecure signatures; so I won't upgrade. In fact I will also uninstall fwupd since in 3 years it never updated my SSD firmware, which was the only thing I was interested in...

FWIW, fwupd has updated stuff successfully on my machine and has resolved or greatly mitigated some issues.
