[fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

Edit: Marking this as fixed because it is looking as if the MESA update has zapped the bug causing this. It is a bit hard to tell as occurrence was unpredictable, but cautious optimism seems appropriate at this time. wink

My keyboard just stopped working in X in the middle of a session. I ended up switching to the multi-user.target and then restarting the graphical.target from a TTY but I'm a bit alarmed as I lost some work and could easily have lost more.

I've removed lines which are simply logging iptables actions. I then get a lot of the same messages repeated.

The switch to TTY4 corresponds to a loss of keyboard responsiveness. However spideroakone was running and it is not a nicely-behaved user of resources, so I'm not certain whether the keyboard really failed at that point or slightly later. It worked fine in the TTY.

The switch to TTY3 is after I determined the keyboard was definitely not achieving anything. I could move the mouse pointer, but clicking on an out-of-focus window had no effect, I couldn't drag the active window and I couldn't change to another desktop.

Evidently the keyboard was not entirely ignored, since I was able to switch to a TTY. So I'm not even sure if the complaints about the keyboard in the journal are just a symptom rather than the cause.

kcminit then crashes:

After this, it is really a free-for-all as drkonqi and kwin_x11 crash, too.

Is there anything useful I could investigate or change? Are the coredumps likely to be worth posting? (I've heard in the past they're only really useful with debug symbols, but I think that was for the kernel.)

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

the keyboard was not entirely ignored, since I was able to switch to a TTY

I could move the mouse pointer, but clicking on an out-of-focus window had no effect, I couldn't drag the active window and I couldn't change to another desktop.

Something™ probably grabs the input.

xdotool key "XF86LogGrabInfo"

will print the active and passive grabs into the xorg log.
(From a console, don't forget to "export DISPLAY=:0")

You can also allow the server to break thsoe grabs (nb. that this is a security risk as it will void any lockscreen!)

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AllowDeactivateGrabs" "true" # also run setxkbmap -option grab:break_actions
Option "AllowClosedownGrabs" "true" # see above, also this will outright kill the grabbing client
EndSection

This is a systemic issue w/ X11 because misbehaving clients can cause this any time.
Inept custom implementations of popup menus (context, combobox, some notifications, …) are extremely prone to this (as their behavior requires an input grab)
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/spideroak-one seems like an awesome contender tongue

There're also protocol errors when resetting usb 1-1, but that's 12 minutes before the switch to TTY4
You may still want to check which device usb 1-1 exactly is and whether it hangs on the sme usb as your keyboard.

Thanks. There's a key for that?!

I'd better wait on this. If it starts happening a lot and I can do it when I'm at home, but I'd better not put that in place on a just-in-case basis.

The security issue or the grabbing input or both?

seth wrote:

Hmm. spideroak hogs the CPU when it backs up/syncs, but it doesn't produce anything by way of GUI elements. There's its icon in the system tray (if that's where it is - I'm never sure what is and what isn't), but it doesn't produce anything to interact with when it syncs/backs up. In fact, it is usually impossible to get any response from it when it is busy doing things.  It is not very well behaved, but I can't imagine it was grabbing input.

I'm not entirely sure how to tell this.
The journal tells me my keyboard is

/devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input4

but I'm not sure how to link that to USB or how to tell if things are on the same bus. USB 1-1 is my mouse, I think.

$ cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1/{product,manufacturer}
USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse
Logitech
$ cat /sys/class/input/input4/id/bustype
0011
$ cat /sys/bus/platform/devices/i8042/serio0/description
i8042 KBD port

I can see my camera is on usb bus 1, for example, but there are lots of other things I don't know how to identify.

The server doesn't have much of a UI.

The security issue or the grabbing input or both?

The stale grabs. The security issue only arises when you enable those debug parameters. (Though iirc they were the default setting for a considerable period…)

USB 1-1 is my mouse, I think.

Yes.

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

I have been facing similar issues since I updated in October end.
Have not been able to figure out why this is happening.

Journalctl indicates that kde cannot access X11

$sudo journalctl| grep 'X11 connection'|more
Nov 09 02:39:53 thinkarch kglobalaccel5[3785]: 02:39:53 WARNING: The X11 connection broke (error 1). Did the X11 server die?

Xorg logs only show the following errors, but haven't seen anyone else mention the same or give solution.

[ 46958.991] (EE) systemd-logind: failed to take device /dev/input/event23: Connection is closed
[ 46958.991] (**) (unnamed): always reports core events
[ 46958.991] (**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/event23"
[ 46958.992] (EE) client bug: Invalid path /dev/input/event23
[ 46958.992] (EE) libinput: (unnamed): Failed to create a device for /dev/input/event23
[ 46958.992] (EE) PreInit returned 2 for "(unnamed)"

What steps can I take to find the cause of this issue?

Thanks in advance.

First of all, post complete logs - not random greps.
These lines don't mean much out of context.

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

Not really. I wasn't trying to move windows, though I may have been switching between virtual desktops. Almost everything I have set in KDE settings for appearance is either breeze, breeze light or breeze dark. The exception is icons, where I'm using a custom set. But window decorations, theme and cursor are all breeze (light/dark).

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

Something very similar just happened again, but I'm not convinced it has anything to do with the keyboard. This time, I happened to have a window focused which could accept input and I could type into the web page's search box. At least, I could type 'j's and I assume there's nothing special about 'j'.

Probably the window manager crashed? Or something?

I could not change virtual desktops.

An alert in the top panel told me Kile had crashed. I could open Kile from the options it provided. However, I could not switch to a terminal emulator or figure out a way to launch one.

I tried the xdotool thing from the VT and then messed around a bit in the dying X session, but it didn't produce anything in the log. (At least, I could find nothing in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after restarting X.)

I've removed lines which are iptables logging from the following. ... indicates repetition of identical or nearly identical errors from qt.qpa.xcb (sequence changes but 'major code' and 'resource id' do not) or concerning png profiles.

This isn't exactly what I got in the journal last time, but it feels as if it probably has the same root cause (and, you know, feelings are such a great guide to computers wink). I don't know if it is the same as the issue mentioned in other threads, but I wouldn't be surprised.

It's been a really long time since KDE crashed like this. Something is awry somewhere sad.

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

That sounds very like it. I gather it's not clear how many bugs there are or what the causes are. Hmm ...

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

Sounds like a bogus MESA commit, triggered by extremely-short-term windows, https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=461316#c20 in which case the compositor should be the problem in kwin

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the talk of a 'different bug' (with a desktop hang and no keyboard) was more relevant.

Is the best thing to do to just wait? Or is there something worth doing in the meantime? I'm guessing downgrading mesa wouldn't be fun ....

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

If the WM (kwin) goes wild, you won't be able to distribute the keyboard focus or replay mouse events to unfocused windows.
Swicth to a different tty, "pkill kwin_x11", make sure it's gone or "-9" it and start a new instance "DISPLAY=:0 kwin_x11 & disown" and then return to the graphical session to see whether everything returned to normal.
Downgrading mesa will be rather invasive, but while w/ all the GL contexts in a plasma session (and kwin itself) it's all but guaranteed, but you can probably avoid the particular bug by disabling the compositor (assuming the short term windows are the main trigger)

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

Was waiting for the next crash to share a more complete log. Will do it as soon as it hits.

However, I was not able to reproduce the error by using the code on 461316.
Were you able to reproduce the error?

Which just looks normal. (I'm not even 100% certain it is the right bit of the log as it is impossible to tell except by counting VT switches. But I switched back to X and played around with the mouse and tried to type, then switched back to the tty and examined the log and it looked very much like this.

The journal shows that plasma-kwin_x11.service crashed. At least, it stopped. It doesn't say it dumped core.

Are the plasmashell errors right before meaningful?

If the WM (kwin) goes wild, you won't be able to distribute the keyboard focus or replay mouse events to unfocused windows.
Swicth to a different tty, "pkill kwin_x11", make sure it's gone or "-9" it and start a new instance "DISPLAY=:0 kwin_x11 & disown" and then return to the graphical session to see whether everything returned to normal.

This worked! smile There are a couple of oddities - the icon for Konsole has changed and windows are not positioned quite as they were, but things seem almost perfectly restored.

I did not, however, have to kill kwin_x11 because it was already gone (according to ps ax | grep ...). I did pkill it just to overdetermine its death, but it seemed pretty dead already.

I couldn't type this time, though I could bring up klipper's list of copy-pastes. I could focus in the search bar, but typing produced no results.

What's the connection between kwin and keyboard input? I understand why my windows go haywire, but I don't really understand why I can't type even into a search box I can focus.

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

I'm not even 100% certain it is the right bit of the log

No, it would print all the active and passive grabs - it's a lot of text and hard to miss.

Are the plasmashell errors right before meaningful?

Too much time distance and "SharedImageManager::ProduceSkia" looks like an electron error, probably some weird, bloated plasmashell extension?

I did not, however, have to kill kwin_x11 because it was already gone

What explains why you're having a hard time passing the keyboard focus anywhere.

So the remaining question is whether if you disable the compositor and wait and wait and wait and wait and … does the problem ever show up?
If not, it's likely the MESA bug.

So I must have done it wrong, I think.

Hmm.... Given this is the first time it has happened since I last reported it, I'm not sure how I'd know. I thought, in fact, the problem might have gone away with the last system update until it happened again yesterday. I'll see if I can get a sense of how frequently it's happening.

Did you run it from a different VT and forget to export the DISPLAY ?

I ran it from a different VT and definitely didn't forget to export DISPLAY. I remember because I almost forgot, but I edited the command before executing it.

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

This just happened again and I've started the xdotool command from the VT to see if it logs anything this time.

I can interact with things in the panel (widgets maybe?). I can type this. I can scroll the page and I could bring up this topic by navigating the site. I can't change desktops and windows don't have title bars. I can't interact with the window-aspect of windows at all - as far as I can tell, there are not any actual windows but only the content of what were windows.

However, I don't get anything in X's log from xdotool i.e. I don't get anything different from what I see without it. Should I be running it as root?

I don't think kwin is going wild. I think kwin ceases to exist.

Edit: I echoed the command I used to a file in case I'm typing something stupid:

export DISPLAY=:0 xdotool key "XF86LogGrabInfo"

produced zilch in X's log ....

Edit 2: If this is the mesa bug, 22.3 may fix it (currently in testing), though some reports suggest the problem isn't entirely eradicated.

Re: [fixed] KDE failure in X mid-session

export DISPLAY=:0 xdotool key "XF86LogGrabInfo"

export DISPLAY=:0; xdotool key "XF86LogGrabInfo"

or

DISPLAY=:0 xdotool key "XF86LogGrabInfo"

Otherwise the xdotool command becomes a parameter to the export.

If that's not the (obvious) problem

produced zilch in X's log ....

is borderline impossible unless
a) you look at the wrong xorg log
b) the server stopped processing (though that would not allow you to interact w/ the browser)
=> "tail -f" the xorg log and run xdotool to see whether it produces output under good™ conditions.

windows don't have title bars

would indicate that kwin crashed, "restarting" it would simply start it (but heal the state nevertheless)
Do you have kwin releted coredumps?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump

(or maybe references about kwin_x11 going down in the system journal after this happened)?

No, it is definitely the obvious problem: I'm an idiot. I'm sure I passed it to export.

There isn't one from today, but kwin definitely disappeared. ps ax | grep kwin found nothing but itself.

Definitely:

Rha 03 01:36:54 FyEnw kwin_x11[1026]: XIO: fatal IO error 62 (Timer expired) on X server ":0"

The messages prior to this are just iptables logging. Besides those, the last prior message is more than 3 minutes earlier:

Rha 03 01:33:51 FyEnw clamd[518]: Sat Dec  3 01:33:51 2022 -> SelfCheck: Database status OK.

*Much* earlier, I have a strange message to the effect that the ethernet connection is activated (and then deactivated). That's definitely spurious, but it is hours, rather than even minutes, earlier.

Is the hostname locally set or received via dhcp?
(Though because of "*much* earlier", that'd probably neither be relevant)

Is this a hybrid graphics system?
