"cat somefile | grep" is a pointless cat; cat-abuse, if you will.
grep can read somefile just fine by itself.

The internet was *exclusively* used by nerds (and I mean *actual* nerds. Also the promise of hot girls on the internet was, in restrospect, some kind of a lie…) at the time (and the military, but only the nerdy soldiers)
And nerds do weird stuff.
