Error booting into USB

Whilst trying to install arch on my alienware 13 R2 (which has had arch in the past) I booted into the usb drive and couldn’t load into the terminal, got the following error message.

Re: Error booting into USB

try another boot device to eliminate a bad usb stick, if that doesnt work then run through some basic hardware troubleshooting:
-run a memtest
-re-seat the ram
-blow out the heatsink/fan
-apply new thermal compound

Re: Error booting into USB

Sorry for taking too long. Mem Test went great with no errors at all. Tried the other things as well and still gives the same issue

Re: Error booting into USB

well from what ive been reading about machine check errors (mce), its either bad memory or bad cpu/overheating cpu, you have ruled out bad memory so it must be the cpu, is the cpu fan working ? EDIT: it probably is or the memtest would fail...

also when did this start happening ? has the machine been sitting around ?

Re: Error booting into USB

Windows does work. Mint... not anymore for some reason it happens with linux only. I installed mint 3 or so years ago so idk what could have changed since then since I mostly used it to watch netflix, or some school work, but not that much.

Re: Error booting into USB

How are you booting those? Is it a Mint live USB which fails? Do you get the same error as on Arch?

What about Windows? Where is that booted from?

Re: Error booting into USB

well what changed to make mint stop working ? was it after an update ? maybe the laptop has a hardware fault that linux is sensitive to and windows ignores.
some people seem to have fixed mce's by changing power supplys, since its a laptop maybe try running it with the battery removed or maybe even with a different power brick if possible.
try an old version of linux, like debian 10 running kernel 4.19, just purely to see if you still get errors.
im just throwing ideas out there to try narrow down whats going on

Re: Error booting into USB

Windows is on an ssd and Mint was on an ssd, but the boot usb fails. Yes got the same error on mint as on Arch. I removed the battery when you told me to check fans as it was a bit inflated, still no progress.
Had to reinstall windows form a boot usb as well and worked flawlessly

EDIT: going to try older version of linux

If this is a recent machine, this probably reactivated secure boot and possibly other settings hostile to Linux. That would make Windows but no version of Linux boot, though I wouldn't think it should give you a hardware error.

Is Fast Start disabled in Windows? (Not the firmware option, but in Windows itself?)

Re: Error booting into USB

I disabled secure boot. don't remember anything particularly harmful to linux left turned on.
Windows Fast Startup isn't on, but it shouldn't affect the usb from booting
