Camera not Detected Dell XPS 13 9350

As in the title. the internal camera is not detected on a vanilla Arch install. I have tried several kernels, and checked bios settings: webcam is enabled. I’m using different apps and websites and they all tell me that I have no camera connected. Which makes sense because when I run

 lsusb

, I get

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0a5c:6412 Broadcom Corp. BCM2045A0
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

and

 lspci

gives

I do not see any video device. On the other hand, I get

sudo dmesg | grep video
[ 4.099269] ACPI: video: Video Device [GFX0] (multi-head: yes rom: no post: no)

but nothing with

sudo dmesg | grep uvcvideo

An fzf search for /dev/vi comes up empty. If I am missing a driver, or need to modify a kernel module, could someone give me a procedure? Next step would be to boot a live iso like MX and see if the cam is detected. But that would not fix the Arch issue.

no but it would tell you that the problem is with arch and not a hardware fault, i would try multiple distros using DIFFERENT OLDER kernel versions

Re: Camera not Detected Dell XPS 13 9350

Does it work with Arch's LTS kernel? What do you get for lsusb, lspci etc. on MX?

Re: Camera not Detected Dell XPS 13 9350

It does not work with the LTS kernel. And it wasn't my cam that worked on the MX live iso, it was the incoming cam from a colleague when I tested Zoom. Dumb I know. I will check the right way tomorrow.

But I did get this from journalctl (on Arch)

journalctl -f
Nov 28 21:11:31 archlinux kernel: usb usb1-port5: attempt power cycle
Nov 28 21:11:32 archlinux kernel: usb 1-5: new full-speed USB device number 17 using xhci_hcd
Nov 28 21:11:32 archlinux kernel: usb 1-5: Device not responding to setup address.
Nov 28 21:11:32 archlinux kernel: usb 1-5: Device not responding to setup address.
Nov 28 21:11:32 archlinux kernel: usb 1-5: device not accepting address 17, error -71
Nov 28 21:11:32 archlinux kernel: usb 1-5: new full-speed USB device number 18 using xhci_hcd
Nov 28 21:11:32 archlinux kernel: usb 1-5: Device not responding to setup address.
Nov 28 21:11:32 archlinux kernel: usb 1-5: Device not responding to setup address.
Nov 28 21:11:33 archlinux kernel: usb 1-5: device not accepting address 18, error -71
Nov 28 21:11:33 archlinux kernel: usb usb1-port5: unable to enumerate USB device

So does this mean that the kernel is trying to load the device and can not? So it is a hardware issue?

Here is a more detailed lsusb output:

 lsusb -tv
/: Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/6p, 5000M
ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/12p, 480M
ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
    |__ Port 3: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=btusb, 12M
        ID 0a5c:6412 Broadcom Corp.
    |__ Port 3: Dev 2, If 1, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=btusb, 12M
        ID 0a5c:6412 Broadcom Corp.
    |__ Port 3: Dev 2, If 2, Class=Vendor Specific Class, Driver=btusb, 12M
        ID 0a5c:6412 Broadcom Corp.
    |__ Port 3: Dev 2, If 3, Class=Application Specific Interface, Driver=, 12M
        ID 0a5c:6412 Broadcom Corp.

So, of course port 5 does not appear.

What I meant was, what is its specification? Who made it and what model is it?

Re: Camera not Detected Dell XPS 13 9350

It seems to be an Integrated Webcam Realtek Integrated_Webcam_HD. From what I can understand fom the output of the commands I ran, the problem is with the drivers or a maybe even a loose cable?  There are quite a few "urgent" bios/driver updates recommended on Dell's webpage so I guess I could use fwupd to update the system, but if something goes wrong, I brick my lap. The cam is really not that important. I just want to figure out what the problem is.

Re: Camera not Detected Dell XPS 13 9350

Do any of the updates mention the webcam? Does the webcam show up in the firmware? (Are there any options for it?)

These are the devices fwupd finds. I do not think the webcam is among them.

│ This updates the dbx to the latest release from Microsoft which adds insecure versions of grub and shim to the list of forbidden signatures due to multiple discovered security updates.
  │
│ Before installing the update, fwupd will check for any affected executables in the ESP and will refuse to update if it finds any boot binaries signed with any of the forbidden signatures. If the installation fails, you will need to update shim and grub packages before the update can be deployed.
  │
│ Once you have installed this dbx update, any DVD or USB installer images signed with the old signatures may not work correctly. You may have to temporarily turn off secure boot when using recovery or installation media, if new images have not been made available by your distribution.

I believe these only involve the bootloader.

Re: Camera not Detected Dell XPS 13 9350

the wiki says the camera works out of the box: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dell_XPS_13_(9350)

looks like it may be a common fault, also looks like the camera is part of the screen so not an easy fix:

Re: Camera not Detected Dell XPS 13 9350

Do you have Windows installed? If so, does it work with Windows and is Fast Start disabled in Windows?

Re: Camera not Detected Dell XPS 13 9350

I wiped Windows and installed Arch. The laptop is 6 years old. It's a project/test machine I use to hone my linux skills. I am running it with xmonad/xmobar, very basic, only the bare minimum stuff. No display manager, no GUI file manager. I have the machine almost just the way I want it, except for the cam.
