Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

For like the first 10 mins on startup but sometime after focused windows get thrown to the back, like if I have firefox and dolphin open and focused on dolphin it's thrown to the back and I can only see firefox, same with right click menus and system menus like the start menu and the notifications tray and like the firefox extensions too.

Here is my neofetch for some quick info

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

What's your focus policy?

qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin org.kde.KWin.supportInformation

also is firefox or any of the involved a flatpak installation and can you reproduce with normal repo packages?

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

Try increasing the focusStealingPrevention policy in

kcmshell5 kcm_kwinoptions

maybe also check in a xev window or so whether spurious clicks/key events happen when you don't think there should be any events.

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

I just got home and waiting/trying to make it happen again with higher focus steal prevention so I can check with the xev

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

It is happening again, weird thing is, I have 3 activity windows, only happening in the default one, and it seems like what's happening is the focused window gets sent to the back, not others sent to the front.

And somehow it has been fixed now.

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

Nxt time this happens, run "xprop _NET_WM_STATE" on the invovlved windows and see whether any of them is (technically) _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN

Happened again, pulled an xprop on firefox

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

The "fixed" window ends up being maximized and having the focus.
Was the broken window supposed to hold any of those states as well?

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

I think I did that myself after it was focused, I know I maximized it, and I think I alt-tabd to it to xprop it.

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

Then there's no significant change, the window is at no point flagged fullscreen (what would impact its stack position)

Is FF always involved?

WM_PROTOCOLS(ATOM): protocols WM_DELETE_WINDOW, WM_TAKE_FOCUS, _NET_WM_PING, _NET_WM_SYNC_REQUEST

I can see how WM_TAKE_FOCUS could be a problem and lo and behold:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=421068

You could test whether reverting to the (illegal, picked out of desperation) current_time "fixes" it.
There might be some more general issue around the server timestamp handling… hmm

I don't know how I could do that as I don't have much of an experience with wms, could you elaborate on how to do this please?

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

You'll have to revert the patch that replaced current_time w/ an actual timestamp and re-compile kwin.

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

I just switched my window theme from utterly round to the default breeze and the problem seems to be gone.

Nope, nope, nope it isn't I just went to another activity and came back and its happening again.

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

This is still happening, I have multiple "Activities" and from time to time this happens and fixes itself after I switch through my activities a couple times with the hotkeys.

You'll have to revert the patch that replaced current_time w/ an actual timestamp and re-compile kwin.

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

I don't think thats the problem because the window on that comes on top doesn't take the focus, the active window is behind the 'ghost' window. Plus I don't know how to revert the patch to check if that fixes it.

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

Interesting logic. You don't know how to revert a patch, therefore you declare it to be irrelevant.
Did you consider that a window in the background obtains the focus w/o being activated/raised?
Did stack order or focus change during the activity change? (Ie. is the wrong window on top or does the wrong window have th focus?)

If every single time a window w/ that idiotic cooperative focus management (WM_TAKE_FOCUS, and in particular "firefox") is involved, I'd very strongly look there.
You clone the kwin repo and "git revert" the patch, then build kwin.

Re: Xorg and KDE Plasma problem with windows

Ok I will try that

And I'm not saying its irrelevant because I don't know how to revert a patch I'm raising another argument for why it might be irrelevant and declaring that I don't know how to do it so I wouldn't be able to check without further help.
