If this is reproducible and scribus reliably works in an openbox session, compare the process list before, inbetween and after the scribus launches.
It probably triggers something and my gut feeling right now is that this relates to Cinnamons a11y settings.
Did you try running scribus on cinnamon w/ a fresh user account?
