Re: I can't record my voice

It's a laptop man. On SimpleScreenRecorder I can record the system sound.

Backed: PulseAudio
Source: Monitor of Built-in Audio Analog Stereo

When I switch to

Backed: PulseAudio
Source: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo

I can't record my voice.

Re: I can't record my voice

Do these work in other applications? What kind of microphone do you have? Where is it plugged in exactly?

Post

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
arecord -lL
amixer -c0 #Or whatever the correct card index according to arecord -l is
pactl list cards
pactl list sources

Re: I can't record my voice

I don't have other applications just skype and SimpleScreenRecorder. I forgot to tell you and Guvcview, no sound at all, but I have video capture.

Re: I can't record my voice

Please read my link and ammend the post with code tags as requested.

This might be some wrong detection/inference logic, the Mic control is muted, capture is not

amixer -c0 set 'Mic',0 100%,100%

does that help?

Re: I can't record my voice

Nothing ever changes, I have the same results to Skype, SimpleScreenRecorder and Guvcview. Couple of months ago all worked in harmony.

amixer -c0 set 'Mic',0 100%,100%
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [off]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [off]

Re: I can't record my voice

If you want this to have any chance to continue, edit your posts and properly use code tags, as V1del asked you twice already.

Re: I can't record my voice

@seth Is it getiing better now? Do you want to change them all? I don't know how to include all the terminal output in codetags.

Re: I can't record my voice

Yes.
Every shell IO and file contents should be in a code box to keep the forum page size limited (scrollable) and the text more readable.

Re: I can't record my voice

Putting every line into an isolated code block doesn't really help…

Re: I can't record my voice

You can put the entire block of output into code tags

Try increasing the volumes involved here

amixer -c0 set 'Mic',0 on,on
pactl set-source-volume alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo 100%,100%

Do you get any volume feedback checking/speaking in e.g. pavucontrol?

Re: I can't record my voice

amixer -c0 set 'Mic',0 on,on
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [on]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [on]
pactl set-source-volume alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo 100%,100%
Invalid volume specification

No, I don't have feedback of my voice.

Re: I can't record my voice

Grr i hate these slight format differences ... but this does remind me, most mics are not actually stereo and there can be weird bugs if the system thinks it is anyway

pactl set-source-volume alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo 100% 0

and check/try again, if it didn't work swap the channel you mute, so "0 100%". Also more generally to test whether anything works at all

arecord -Dhw:0 test.wav

can you record anything with that?

Re: I can't record my voice

Stop pulseaudio, run alsamixer to activate and ramp up the mic and both mic boosters (F4 to control the input devices)
Then run

arecord -f cd > test.wav

, yell into your microphone, ctrl+c to stop the recording and "mpv test.wav" to see whether it has sound.

We need to take PA and skype out of the equation.
One, because it's the primary way to break your audio and the other because we don't know what it does to the mic settings.

And fix post #5.

Edit: grrr as well tongue

Re: I can't record my voice

pactl set-source-volume alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo 100% 0
Inconsistent volume specification.
arecord -Dhw:0 test.wav
Warning: Some sources (like microphones) may produce inaudible results
with 8-bit sampling. Use '-f' argument to increase resolution
         e.g. '-f S16_LE'.
Recording WAVE 'test.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
arecord: set_params:1352: Sample format non available
Available formats:
- S16_LE
- S32_LE
arecord -f cd > test.wav # Still have system sound
Recording WAVE 'stdin' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo

Re: I can't record my voice

Not only have you ignored numerous requests to fix post five, but you continue to use code tags without actually putting them around the code.  What's the limitation?  You do realize that code tags can (and should) encompass more than one line, right?

While code tags around commands and their output is best, if given the option of having them only around the command or only around the output, having them around the output would be preferable - but you are doing the opposite.

Re: I can't record my voice

@Trilby I don't know how to include all the terminal output in codetags. Read the post #10 and #12. My problem is to record my voice and not the codetags.

LoL... No, you misunderstood Trilby netiquette suggestion! smile

Please, when you write a Post and there's something realted to Terminal Output(s) (eg.: Bash output) use the [ code ] [ / code ] tags without spaces!

Re: I can't record my voice

Does the test.wav you should've gotten contain audio? Did you try speaking while running it? "Worked some months ago" when, which kernel? Test the LTS kernel?

Re: I can't record my voice

Stable linux kernel 6.0.10 - Vanilla Linux kernel and modules, with a few patches applied.
Yes the test.wav contained audio, but system audio. Not of my voice.
When I decided to switch to the LTS Kernel, I'll post to you again. Okay?

Re: I can't record my voice

Yes that's now but which kernel did it last work on? Rerun the test.wav experiment but combine the commands

arecord -Dhw:0 -f cd test.wav

that should bypass pulse and should be using your mic. Also for good measure output of

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

the entire output in a single code tag combination this time please.

Re: I can't record my voice

My problem is to record my voice and not the codetags.

It can easily become.

I'll just point out that as long as I don't activate my mic boost, I can yell all I want, it's not loud enough.
