[SOLVED] Why xterm fonts go double-width in new install?

Old-timer here, using OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and many Linux distributions (even Arch) since 1998.

So why would Arch display xterm fonts double-width when using a TTF font?

New Arch Linux install today, default everything, no .Xresources file yet, window manager is Ratpoison, simple as can be. I've used this same setup for years.

Default font:

You're possibly using "inconsolata expanded"?
Please post the output of

xrdb -q

and

fc-list | grep -i inconso

What does

xterm -fa Inconsolata-10

do?

Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate your help.

xrdb -q

returns nothing.

fc-list | grep -i inconsolata

returns a lot (see below).

and

xterm -fa Inconsolata-10

does the same double-width thing.

Not to pick on Inconsolata, all other TTF fonts I tried do this same double-width too.   EXCEPT I just installed "Ubuntu Mono" and that one works great: no double-width with Ubuntu Mono.

Any clue why they would be treated differently?

What are "all other TTF fonts I tried" exactly?

If there're no xrdb entries, how do you usually start xterm and select the font?
The image looks like it's treated as variable width font…

Thanks again. I think you're right that Inconsolata in particular was/is being treated as variable width, not mono.  Now that I see the "fc-list :mono", everything I try there (except Inconsolata) works great, no double-width.

I had no xrdb entries while debugging, removed my .Xresources file to remove all variables, loading fonts manually.  But now it's back with .vt100.faceName Ubuntu Mono and all is well.

You're a really impressive dude, Seth.  33,784 posts in the last 10 years, helping fools like me.  Thank you.
