[SOLVED] Problem connecting to Congstar router Wifi

Hi there,

I am traveling right now in Germany, trying to connect to the router that is provided to me in this guesthouse.

Connecting my Android phone to the network with the provided password, works. According to Android, the connection is WPA/WPA personal secured. I am posting this, tethering. So far I was not able to find a solution online (also checking out https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … /Wireless).

Gnome tells me on password request 'alternatively you can press the WPS button on your router'. This didn't help, unfortunately. I am also unsure what this does.

Last arch update: Last Friday (running a super slow update right now, but I doubt it will help).
Any ideas?

But first disable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … domization - the AP doesn't respond to the association requests and some don't like the MAC changes.

Edit: in doubt stop/disable NM and try to connect w/ wifi-menu or iwd.

You don't face the same situation as the OP - you do auth and associate, but deauthenticate immediately for "UNSPECIFIED" reasons after previously have been told to gtfo by the AP for X, Y & Z

This is an active denial, the AP doesn't allow you. Talk to the universty IT on further requirements to get access.

The only difference is "W", which likewise times out.
Also please 

systool -vm iwlwifi

- it still complains about VHT and I seem to recall that there was an oddity about the parameter syntax (maybe not bool, but integer, ie. "1" instead of "true")

For an open AP, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … ireless#iw should do.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1991578 has a similar pattern and seems iwd specific - maybe the 77er status is a red hering.
Probably open a new thread, post a complete system journal covering access attempts and if you want to pseudonymize stuff, make sure it's bijective (ie. you replace one excat token with another exact token, always) - though neither SSID nor BSSID are particularily privacy-worthy (we might be able to infer the university from the SSID, but that's it)

Seth, thank you for these tips. It actually worked, so this is the solution.

Edit: in doubt stop/disable NM and try to connect w/ wifi-menu or iwd.

However, I've reverted the changes as I actually like MAC address randomization and the network I am supposed to use is simply not safe. I feel like keeping the original settings makes the insecurity more visible for me.

Did you make sure it was the MAC AR and not disabling higher 802.11 levels?

Ftr, this is more of a privacy and less of a security concern - unless you're expecting data skimming APs around, you can turn that off (while at home)
The main purpose is to prevent your position from being tracked when moving around.
Also nb. that it's currently not supported when using iwd as wifi backend.
