xmonad not showing errors on M-q

I have successfully set up xmonad with the latest darcs template from https://wiki.haskell.org/Xmonad/Config_archive

I now want to start to add things + further customize, and for this want to read compiler errors.
`M-q` generated no output, but did try to recompile, as it could be observed that the terminal had changed back to xterm. Running `xmonad --recompile` in a terminal did generate the expected compiler output, but it still did no look the same way I had seen in videos. I found out that I was missing the xorg-message package xmonad uses to pipe its errors and after installing, running recompile in the console does produce those beautiful xorg-message windows.

M-q however still generates no error messages and I don't know why and where to look for clues.

Thanks for your help in advance.

PS:
After fixing an error and successfully recompiling and restarting, xterm still is the default terminal. Only exiting X and restarting brings the terminal back to the custom one specified in xmonad.hs. I don't know if and how this is related but both facts together make it really slow and tedious to write and test xmonad.hs

EDIT: I meant to post this in "Applications and Desktop Environments", sorry. Maybe it can be moved there?

Re: xmonad not showing errors on M-q

Is it possible to maybe move this to the "Applications and Desktop Environments" section?
