Hi,
today my PC has shut itself down for no apparent reason. Three times.
The syslog claims that the power button was pressed.
I can confidently claim that that was not the case, because I have
physically disconnected the powerbutton and the power LED from the
mainboard after starting the PC.
All fans except for graphics card are running. I'm currently
investigatig why the graphics card fans are off, but frankly: I almost
never use the graphics card, except for darktable's OpenCL support.
Is there any chance that this is not due to failing hardware? The
system has been running fine for a few years now, so I doubt it would
be an incompatibility.
Any Idea where to look?

I can control the GPU fans from `nvidia-settings`, so they are not broken.
Mainboard battery is at 3V, as it should be.
Testing the battery made me spend some time in BIOSUEFI, and the bug even occurs then, i.e., while in BIOSUEFI the system goes down...

If you crash in your BIOS/UEFI then it's certainly something hardware. Do RAM tests first as that's the usual culprit.
Edit: after you disconnect and reconnect all cables inside and wouldn't hurt to reseat cards and RAM. Just in case something jiggled loose.
Edit2: And a cable itself could have gone bad. Replace if that is so but that isn't the easiest to test for.

physically disconnected the powerbutton and the power LED from the
mainboard after starting the PC.
The power "button" is the pins on the board - whenever they get connected, they'll trigger (you can reboot a system w/ a jumper - or a screwdriver)

Thank you headkase. I've reconnected some cables, and removed some dust (was not too bad). But the problem persists. The fact that it now seems to boot itself would pretty much rule out flawed RAM, I guess?
As a temporary workaround, I've set
HandlePowerKey=ignorein `/etc/systemd/logind.conf`, followed by calling

I'm not prepared for this, I have not looked at the hardware market for years: My current mainboard is an Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0, supporting an AMD FX-6300 processor and 8GiB RAM. I thik I'd like to keep my 6GB MSI GeForce GTX 1060 which I've just bought recently... wait... 2017?

Jepp, the board really thinks someone is pressing that button. Even when it is off (see my previous post). Actually, for testing whether the switch was broken, I disconnected it, and started the system with a screwdriver as you've described. It's not the switch.

Ok, this is a new idea (I'll hold the marking as solved).
How could I test this? My home setup has been the same for the better part of three years now. Wooden floor, no plastic carpet, have not moved around desk or furniture...

Check the local humidity - dry air promotes this.
Move the system into a different environment (unheated basement?) - or change the local humidity closer to 55%
The (normally) humid air acts as conduit to slowly, but constantly level the [edit: charge], preventing the buildup that will then result in uncontrolled discharges.

Since systemd-logind is the one that actually initiates the poweroff, triggered by the faulty circuitry setting off ACPI, have you tried changing the action for the HandlePowerKey event handler (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … PI_events) to 'ignore'?

Hmmm, I've done some laundry, hanging it in the same room as my PC. Got humidity up from 30% to 38% at 20.3℃. The problem disappeared. Thank you seth, it look's like you were right.
But still, I find humidity little palpable (as in: walk into my offce, first check humidity to find out whether working will be OK today, otherwise find laundry to do — maybe palpable is not quite the right word for this).
Anyways: This setup has seen dry winters before, so I still daresay the hardware's gone south, if only a wee bit.

I've replaced the mainboard, which implied new CPU and RAM (which is kinda sad after nine years of dependable service). I've plugged this together on 24th December, and the bug has not occurred since. The expected 4th column is 0 if I shut down by typing `poweroff`, or 1 if I actually press the button.

An additional note: When it comes to comfort, warm dry air will 'feel' cooler than warm moist air. If you are attempting to conserve by lowering the temperature, you are going to feel more comfortable if there is increased humidity vs low humidity. Although counter-intuitive, it has to do with evaporation of moisture from your skin. The opposite is true in the summer, dry air will feel cooler than moist hot air.
