I may have found another clue but I don't have much hope about it, looking at the linuxmint forums post from ages ago, he looked in .xsession-errors, I just now looked in there and found something else:
(xfsettingsd:1048): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: 20:06:57.503: ICE I/O Error
(xfsettingsd:1048): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: 20:06:57.503: Disconnected from session manager.
(xfdesktop:1094): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: 20:06:57.503: ICE I/O Error
(xfdesktop:1094): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: 20:06:57.503: Disconnected from session manager.
ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 1098, errno = 11
(xfce4-power-manager:1109): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: 20:06:57.549: ICE I/O ErrorOffline
Nevermind, these errors are from ages ago and do not occur when XFCE fails to launch, so they are another dead end.

If that hack works, that's not a problem w/ GDM but the takedown of your session.
I'd start by looking at the system journal to figure *why* the login fails. You're stressing the "wayland" part, do you not face the situation w/ https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Use_Xorg_backend ?
Oh my god, you were right, just tried the "Random Hack (TM)" and I am now able to login to XFCE from GDM Wayland after startx and whatnot, thanks for your help, I'm finally going to mark this as solved after 4 days, if I had just tried the hack in the first place, we wouldn't have wasted 3 days on it.
To clarify, the random hack that worked was this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1291585 … n-to-xfce4
I added this to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default:
killall -9 -u $USERand now I am able to login to XFCE from GDM Wayland.

It seems like I can't mark it as solved, but it is solved, the problem is gone.

killall -9 -u $USER
If you don't, what process is lingering around?
I'll through a curveball: emacs?
And just ftr:
I don't think[, i simply believe] anything was lingering

Nah it's definitely not Emacs that lingers. I don't know what process lingers but it's probably something from the GNOME or XFCE or something else session that lingers which causes me to be unable to login the XFCE.

Even if there is a dodgy process that lingers, that hack has made GDM kill it after every session, I cannot be bothered to chase down more dead ends.
