Hello,
This is my first post, please let me know if I am posting it at the wrong place, in the wrong format. Some useful information is probably missing, I am happy to provide it if you tell me how to get it ![]()
I am running Arch, using KDE plasma, SDDM (I think) and X11, and have a laptop with a dedicated nvidia GPU (RTX A2000) and and integrated intel one. The external monitors are directly connected to the nvidia GPU. AFAIK, I haven't used the dedicated GPU so far, but I have been able to use external monitors connected to the GPU. I recently changed my config and broke nvidia support, hence I am not able to connect external monitors to my laptop anymore. I would love 1) to be able to use external monitors again and 2) make use of the dedicated nvidia GPU.
I have installed the packages nvidia and optimus-manager. When using the command "optimus-manager --switch hybrid" or "optimus-manager --switch nvidia", I get logged out, and login again, but the "optimus-manager --status" doesn't change, the "integrated" mode is still used, and the "GPU mode requested for next login:" is the one I just configured. Manually logging out and in again doesn't apply the change.
It is possible that I touched some configs I shouldn't have while trying to make this work, but don't have a history of the changes I made.
Thank you in advance for your help ![]()

You're looking at the wrong Xorg log.
I recently changed my config and broke nvidia support, hence I am not able to connect external monitors to my laptop anymore. I would love 1) to be able to use external monitors again and 2) make use of the dedicated nvidia GPU.
The official™, supported, suggested and out-of-the-box approach to this would be prime - you (probably) have been using the GPU to drive the outputs and could use prime-run to run isolated processes on the GPU.
If you want to use the GPU exclusively and have the option, disable the IGP in the BIOS settings.
If that's not possible, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … phics_only
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=281907&p=2 figured a conflict/bug in the takedown of sddm and OMs prime-switch process
However optimus-manager is some sort of legacy approach to switch between the VGAs, but requires to re-login and is probably of very little use if you've outputs on both of them (because you cannot power down either)

Sorry, I missed that, it was stupid.

I am not interested in running the GPU exclusively ![]()

Thanks a lot, I managed to get one external monitor working with prime!

I have uninstalled optimus-manager.
However, now as soon as I connect a second external monitor (I have one on usb-c and one on hdmi), no matter which one is connected first, the UI becomes super slow (5 seconds delay between user input and visual change), even when I disable one monitor from the KDE "Display and Monitor" settings. Do you know what might be the cause? And which log files may be relevant to look at?

the UI becomes super slow
Does that affect everything or just some clients? Mouse cursor?
What happens if you suspend the compositor (SHIFT+Alt+F12)?
Please post the output of "xrandr -q" and an xorg log covering that situation.
On a distant stretch: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=282021 ?
Is the internal output still active?
Online
It seems to affect all windows. However, the mouse cursor doesn't get slowed down. There is a 3-5 second delay between the click happens and the action is produced. Keyboard input is slow to appear on screen (unlike mouse cursor movements).
Something else that I just noticed, out of the 3 monitors I have (built-in screen, hdmi, and usb-c connected), enabling 1 or all 3 monitors works without a lag, but enabling only 2 out of the 3 (no matter which combination) results in a slow down.
Also, one of the external monitors is configured to be 90° clockwise. For all display combinations, the display isn't rotated at all (windows appear with 90° rotation), but when moving the mouse on that screen, it moves correctly as if the screen was actually rotated 90° clockwise. Changing the display orientation doesn't change the windows orientation, but changes the mouse movement direction in this display.

Dec 21 08:17:41 guinux sddm-helper[842]: Adding cookie to "/home/guissou/.Xauthority"Now the rotated monitor works as expected! It can rotate. All screen combinations (built-in screen, hdmi monitor and usb-c monitor) work as expected, but the combination hdmi+usb-c monitor enabled and build-in screen disabled. This results in a global slowness, all windows are slow, and only the mouse cursor moves fast (and the click reaction is delayed), typing in windows is slow.
PS: the "Plasma Wayland session" in System Settings->Display and Monitor, is very weird, after rebooting the host, the message was gone. The "loginctl session-status" logs date from after the reboot. Maybe removing the xf86-video packages solved it.

Thanks for the references I now understand better!
I downgraded to nvidia 520, but now the external monitors aren't detected at all anymore.

A "naive" downgrade like that will install an incompatible kernel module for he current kernel. Install the appropriately older version of nvidia-dkms instead of the standard nvidia package as well as linux-headers for your current kernel.

Nice, it worked! Any advice for checking when the bug is solved and upgrading the nvidia packages to the last version?
Thanks a lot for your precious help seth and V1del!

Put the nvidia packages into your ignore list and check again when the actual driver version goes up past 525.60.11 (pacman will inform you on the version you aren't getting, pay attention to that) note that if you're unlucky the DKMS build with this older version might fail when the kernel bumps to 6.1 but hopefully a fixed release is out by then (or you might want to hold the kernel on 6.0.x for a bit in that case as well).

Great, thank you!
