[SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

Hello, this is my first post on the forum.

I use Vanilla Arch, KDE, btrfs with file compression, Grub, NetworkManager.
No changes on the system after the installation, no additional programs (except for firefox) installed.

After a fresh install of vanilla Arch Linux on an older PC, through the use of the archinstall-Script (!), I get the following error in the Log. (As I enter the password of my Wireless LAN Connection into the NetworkManager GUI (provided by KDE) and press Enter)
System is not responsive at all. Needs hard reset.

I use a WLAN Stick, which worked before on a (other) Arch Derivate.

journalctl -u NetworkManager.service

Please provide the full install log and also use the "Report" button on your post to request that this thread be moved to the Arch Linux Guided Installer sub-forum, where it belongs. Thanks.

Don't ask me where the log is though, that information is easily findable. Consider it a challenge.

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

Well the log is without errors.

Is this a Broadcom device? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=244836

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

Do I need the aur Package mt7610u_wifi_sta with the appropriate Kernel Modules?
I mean, is the driver for the stick already integrated into the kernel?

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

I think the driver was mainlined for kernel 4.19 but I suppose it's worth a try at least.

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

I remember that I had to wipe the HDD with fdisk in the past manually, before using the archinstall-Script.
The script would work without errors, but the computer would not even start.

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

Perhaps check the drive & memory health then.

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

Solved. It is a Bug in the newest Kernel with the Mediatek Driver.
Disconnected the WLAN-Dongle and no more issues. (Except no internet)

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

Which WLAN Dongle Chipset is actually recommended for vanilla arch? The last time I searched for hours and found the Mediatek Dongle. Which now no longer works.

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager crashes system after fresh install

Assuming it's a transient kernel issue that will get fixed there's no general and definitive answer to that, bugs can happen, hold the kernel a version lower or switch to linux-lts for the time being. If you are around long enough there are various forms of breakages in this space with every driver, even the "well supported" iwlwifi and ath chipsets. As far as USB dongles go you are probably going safest with mediatek indeed. Your other alternatives are realtek cards which are plagued by much more issues.

For the record, the correct translations are:
1) operation is not permitted
2) file system is read-only
