[SOLVED] doxbos crashes Xorg

When using dosbox in fullscreen, very often Xorg crashes.  This sometimes happens when I bring the window of doxbos to fullscreen with alt-Enter, other times the crash happens while inside dosbox.

The log of Xorg is not particularly enlighting:

I found these logged errors in journalctl, shortly before the crash, not sure if they are relevant

Re: [SOLVED] doxbos crashes Xorg

Please post the entire xorg log to get us an idea of the hardware/config.

Basic rule is that if Xorg dies, it's an xorg problem - whether kwin or dosbox or whatever triggers that is secondary.
My money is on xf86-video-intel

Re: [SOLVED] doxbos crashes Xorg

So does removing xf86-video-intel (or forcing the modesetting DDX driver) stop the crashes?

I am not sure I understand, if you mean to change the output= settings in dosbox.conf, no, it still crashes when output=opengl, or output=ddraw.

Until not a long ago I didn't observe these crashes, so I presume it's one of the latest xorg  updates...

Re: [SOLVED] doxbos crashes Xorg

No, he means what I bet on: remove the xf86-video-intel package.
Make sure the driver isn't referenced anywhere (grep -ri intel /{usr/share,etc}/X11/xorg.conf*) and forget about dosbox. X11 server crashes are an X11 server problem.

Indeed, removing xf86-video-intel xorg no longer crashes. Thanks a lot!

Still, I am a bit concerned: the wiki page Intel graphics reports that eliminating this package may produce artifacts as well as a decay in performance.

That's five years old and the Phoronix benchmarks are a joke. The Intel DDX driver has been abandoned for a long time now.

Since I suspect the reported artifacts and judder to be related to the pageflipping, I'd look at the more recent phoronix article at https://www.phoronix.com/news/Modesetti … ree-Merged for an attempt to mitigate them (should they present themselves)
