[SOLVED] Second monitor sleeps but is detected by xrandr

Hi,

I am trying to fix an issue with my multi-head setup since the last pacman update.

I have 2 monitors connected, the Primary (right-hand side) is connected on DP-3 and is working fine, the Secondary (left-hand side) is connected on HDMI-1 and is not working correctly. The monitor is being detected by the system, but stays in sleep mode.

From boot, the second display is asleep during bootloader (which is normal as it always has been), but when I reach my sddm greeter, it flicks on briefly but then goes to sleep mode. If I log in to i3, it does not wake up and stays asleep, but is detected by xrandr.

~ ∮ xrandr | grep -w connected
DP-3 connected primary 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 597mm x 336mm
HDMI-1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I am able to restore it's functionality by a simply restarting i3wm. When I do

killall

on i3, it kicks me back to sddm and the second monitor wakes up and displays as normal, I can then log back in to i3 and dual monitor setup works.
I have tried another

pacman -Syu

but it is still broken.

Any ideas?

Also, this is my xorg config:

~ ∮ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-settings.conf
Section "ServerFlags"
  Option      "Blanktime" "0"
EndSection
 ~ ∮ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
Section "Monitor"
  Identifier  "DP-3"
  Option      "Primary" "true"
  Option      "DPMS" "false"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier  "HDMI-1"
  Option      "LeftOf" "DP-3"
  Option      "DPMS" "false"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
  Option      "DPMS" "Disable"
EndSection

Re: [SOLVED] Second monitor sleeps but is detected by xrandr

xrandr | grep -w connected

Don't grep.
I guess when this happens a mere

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto --left-of DP-3

will do?
It's likely SDDM that disables the output then. You could use the Xset script to convince it otherwise…

Yes, that works. The screen awakens and goes where it is supposed to.

Thank you for the suggestion. I did try that to no avail however.

#!/bin/sh
# Xsetup - run as root before the login dialog appears

xrandr --output DP-3 --auto --primary
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto --left-of DP-3

Short of adding in

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto --left-of DP-3

to my .profile or i3 config, is there a cleaner way to handle this?

As an aside, what could have caused this issue to arise in my last update? I looked through https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-p … sddm/trunk for an indication but I don't think there is anything there that aligns with the problem (not that I really know what I'm looking at).

Here are the package changes since the issue arose (truncated 'cat /var/log/pacman.log' to show only from 13th);

I'm pretty sure that the issue started on the 13th which aligns with when I uninstalled polybar-git and replaced it with the community version of polybar, but I don't know how that could cause the issue. I would prefer to use the community version than the AUR version which was the reason for the change.

Re: [SOLVED] Second monitor sleeps but is detected by xrandr

Also, since adding the 2 lines in to '/usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup', sddm does actually display the greeter on both monitors now, in case that helps.

Re: [SOLVED] Second monitor sleeps but is detected by xrandr

Thank you for the suggestion. I did try that to no avail however.

Also, since adding the 2 lines in to '/usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup', sddm does actually display the greeter on both monitors now

Means "yes avail", but something™ disables the output when your session starts.

to my .profile or i3 config, is there a cleaner way to handle this?

.profile would be the wrong file, but it very much sounds as if some of your session scripts do already xrandr - something.

grep -r xrandr ~

would be the broadswoard approach to find that file. (Hopefully)

My apologies, but it seems as after another restart sddm reverted back to primary monitor only and putting the secondary to sleep on the greeter.

Thank you again for your help, I will try that search when I get home and post my findings.

Re: [SOLVED] Second monitor sleeps but is detected by xrandr

Well I'm not really sure what I've done because this afternoon when I cold booted my machine, both monitors worked as normal and the issue appears to be resolved.
I did run a recursive grep for 'xrandr' in my home as you suggested and most of the results appear to be irrelevant (eg. Lutris and Steam scripts, log files and polybar configs).

I'll mark this as solved as I can no longer troubleshoot because it is working again.

Thanks for your help Seth.

That is a possibility, I did unplug and inspect both ends of the cable during the process...

Thanks again.

Re: [SOLVED] Second monitor sleeps but is detected by xrandr

So I've found the the issue that was causing this problem.

What was happening was; when the sddm greeter appeared, the LED on the secondary monitor flashed on briefly as if it was waking up, but then would go back to power saving mode again. I would then enter my password and log in to i3, which would load on single display.
At this point, simply quitting i3, thereby pushing me back to the sddm greeter would wake the secondary display and I could log in a second time with both displays active.

It seemed to point to an issue with SDDM as I had tried another HDMI cable per your suggestion with the same result.

After confirming that the Xsetup script still contained the instructions to set both monitors;

~ ∮ cat /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup
#!/bin/sh
# Xsetup - run as root before the login dialog appears

xrandr --output DP-3 --auto --primary
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto --left-of DP-3

I started wondering how this script gets called. Which lead me to my sddm.conf file;

~ ∮ cat /etc/sddm.conf.d/sddm.conf
[General]
# Halt command
HaltCommand=/usr/bin/systemctl poweroff

# Reboot command
RebootCommand=/usr/bin/systemctl reboot

[Theme]
# Current theme name
Current=sugar-dark

# Cursor theme used in the greeter
CursorTheme=FlatbedCursors-Green

# Theme directory path
ThemeDir=/usr/share/sddm/themes

[Users]

# Remember the session of the last successfully logged in user
RememberLastSession=true

# Remember the last successfully logged in user
RememberLastUser=true

Realising that when I was having issues with the greeter not displaying correctly, I had cut out a lot of the options from the template at "/usr/lib/sddm/sddm.conf.d/default.conf", I noticed that I had cut out a very obviously needed section being;

[X11]
# Path to a script to execute when starting the display server
DisplayCommand=/usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup

Once I added that in to my sddm.conf file so that the script actually gets called, the problem was resolved.

The only thing that is puzzling is the intermittent nature of the issue. It was working fine for over a week without that section in the config file, then didn't work, then did work for 2 days before not working again. I guess that is why I didn't suspect the change I made to the sddm.conf file straight away as being the cause.

Either way, hopefully this might help someone in the future, and looking back now, it seems like a stupid mistake on my part that caused the issue...

The only thing that is puzzling is the intermittent nature of the issue.

Race condition. If it's not the cable, try https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … _KMS_start (though the GPU seems to be there, but maybe the monitor is a bit slow to wake up?)

Thanks seth, I'll give that a look as it has started happening again this morning after all that...

Re: [SOLVED] Second monitor sleeps but is detected by xrandr

So after adding in

MODULES=(amdgpu)

to my "/etc/mkinitcpio.conf", and re-generating the initramfs, the monitor seems to be working again as normal.

Before trying this, I did temporarily switch from sddm to lightdm and the problem persisted, so that ruled out an issue with sddm.

I'll see how it goes for a while now, I won't mark as solved just yet as I thought it was fixed before when it wasn't. Hopefully this has finally fixed it though, *fingers crossed*
