Audio stopped working on a 4K TV with HDMI 2.1 120Hz ports connected to a PC via HDMI with an RTX 3080 GPU. Everything was working fine for months. I recently upped the refresh rate from 60hz to 120hz, and both audio and video were initially working fine.
Then after about a week at 120hz with no reboots and no problems, I temporarily switch audio to Bluetooth headphones. When I switched back to HDMI audio sound was not working.
I tried for hours to get the audio working again. After a reboot, HDMI audio worked for a few minutes, then stopped.
Finally found this article - [470.57.02] Nvidia 30-series HDMI audio stops working when switching from 60Hz to 120Hz - Linux - NVIDIA Developer Forums. Also found this - Nvidia + LG C1 120hz no sound.
The fix, for now, is to set the refresh rate back to 60hz.
This issue is a massive bummer for anyone with Nvidia RTX 30 video cards and monitors/TVs that support higher refresh rates.
