Downloading from extra

Hi,

I'm located in Phoenix, Arizona.  Downloading from "extra" repository is painfully slow.  I've tried removing all but one or two repositories to try and find one that is reasonbly responsive.  Still, I'm only getting between 50 and 125 kbps.  the "current" and "testing" repositories are giving around 500.

This has been consistent for quite a while.

Does somebody else live in this area and have a /etc/pacman.d/extra file that they could share or tell me which repositories ought to be near the top of the extra file?

Is there other advice that anyone could share?

Thx in advance!

Re: Downloading from extra

Well, you can do this:

pacman -S netselect

If you don't already ahve it
then run:

/usr/bin/sortmirrors

This will sort your mirrors by ping, giving you best results for your location.

Re: Downloading from extra

Put whatever mirror you're using for current at the top of your extra repo list?

Thx for posting this.  I bet it'll do the trick.

Yepz, no problem.
@brazzmonkey, it's actually stated in the pacman.conf file

Re: Downloading from extra

I ran /usr/bin/sortmirrors as suggested.  I did get some weird results.  One time all current mirrors were deleted.  Another time it commented out all of the extra and unstable repositories.  So, I recovered the files from a different computer and reordered extra a little bit.

I'm going OK now, still slower on "extra" than others, but there seems to be some issues with sortmirrors.  I think it might be best to reorder by hand.  My 2c.

Re: Downloading from extra

sortmirrors has some problem of its own. I think there is another script on the forum/wiki to reorder mirrors.

If you get good speed for the current repo, use the same mirror for the extra repo.
