Lag and stuttering on GNOME 43.2 (nvidia)

I started experimenting with GNOME today (coming from BSPWM) and I have noticed a couple of problems. I have three monitors, one of them connected to a GTX 1660 Ti and the other two connected to a GTX 1050. When I tried running GNOME on Wayland (which I believe is the default nowadays), my main monitor was working perfectly and everything was very smooth. However, I couldn't get any signal to the other monitors. I think this is an nvidia issue (I'm running the proprietary drivers because GTX 1050 does not support the nvidia-open drivers afaik) since everyone seems to say online that Wayland and nvidia don't work well together. Is the Wayland situation still truly so awful with nvidia proprietary drivers in early 2023?

Well, I gave up on Wayland and tried running GNOME on Xorg instead. However, now I have another problem. When I move windows around, I notice significant stuttering. I have a 144hz monitor and moving these windows around feels like 60hz. Still, when I move my cursor around, it is silky smooth so I'm sure I'm indeed using the 144hz mode (I have checked the settings as well). Now that I compare, I might have the same sort of lag on BSPWM as well, it's just not so noticeable because I never move windows around on BSPWM (but using a browser doesn't feel very smooth on either GNOME on Xorg or BSPWM (and yes, I have hardware acceleration enabled, at least I think so because I configured it once and playing videos on YouTube for example is fine)). Any ideas what could be causing this stuttering/lag? I'm running nvidia 525.60.11, GNOME & Mutter 43.2 and Xorg 1.21.1.6 (on Arch Linux of course). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Lag and stuttering on GNOME 43.2 (nvidia)

I tried the steps mentioned in the Reddit post, they didn't seem to help. After adding the environment variables to /etc/environment, I am getting around 10000 FPS in glxgears. I also checked the FPS using journalctl, it was 60 when my monitor was running at 144hz. I should probably mention that my other monitors are running as PRIME monitors. This is because they don't work at all, if I try to configure them through nvidia-settings. I do get a signal to both screens, but they are completely blank and the cursor looks like a cross. Any idea why this is happening? These monitors are running on the GTX 1050, which is my secondary card.

Anyway, I tried only using my main monitor on Xorg and it was quite smooth. I think it's not quite as good as on Wayland but it seemed manageable. However, when I enable the other monitors, all animations and window dragging feel like 60hz again. Any suggestions? Please let me know if any extra information is necessary.

Re: Lag and stuttering on GNOME 43.2 (nvidia)

feel like 60hz again

Check that against the clutter output
"Feelings" are not very reliable (you're maybe seeing artifacts, vsync lags, double syncs etc., but no human has so far demonstrated visual recognition > 75Hz and for adult caucasians it's more like 60Hz - the path length probably  becomes a limiting factor. And if you're seeing artifacts, they could be god knows what)

Next to that

let me know if any extra information is necessary

The xorg log, "xrandr -q" and "printenv"

Re: Lag and stuttering on GNOME 43.2 (nvidia)

If you meant the clutter FPS output from journalctl, i got two different results: when using my main monitor only, I got 144 FPS and it was completely normal. This was the case also when I enabled the other monitors through nvidia-settings (so they were NOT running as PRIME displays). Unfortunately, in this mode the monitors are useless as they only show the black cross cursor and are blank. I searched this up and it seems quite common, however I did not anybody with this particular problem when using a PC, all cases were on Optimus laptops. That must have something to do with the multiple GPUs then I guess. Anyway, when I use the other monitors as PRIME displays (so far the only way I've managed to get them working somewhat properly), journalctl gives me 60 FPS so my feelings were correct in this case.

Here is my printenv output:

Something notable is that when configuring the monitors through nvidia-settings (not using PRIME), they disappear from the GNOME display settings. Same thing in xrandr: the output is the same as posted above, except the other monitors (DP-1-1 and HDMI-1-0) won't show up. I am pretty confident that there would be no problem if I didn't have to use PRIME displays to get them working (to be honest I'm not even exactly sure what PRIME is).

Re: Lag and stuttering on GNOME 43.2 (nvidia)

After doing some further research, I was able to find someone with a very similar case from NVIDIA forums (https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/d … 0/199995/5). Unfortunately, it seems that the case was never solved. I am starting to lose hope.

After discovering that multiple X screens are not a solution (since I obviously need to be able to drag windows across the monitors), I decided to try something else. I plugged all the monitors to the main GPU, GTX 1660 Ti. To my surprise, this didn't help at all. I was able to control all the monitors through nvidia-settings without PRIME, but the issue still remains. Hopefully the logs I posted above could help. And thanks for bearing with me with this annoying issue.

Oh, and I also tried Wayland. When using one GPU for all monitors, Wayland seems to work perfectly, there are not artifacts or stutters whatsoever. Still, Wayland might have some unstability issues that I am unaware of (since I didn't try any games). I would also prefer not to use the 1660 Ti for all monitors.

Re: Lag and stuttering on GNOME 43.2 (nvidia)

Unfortunately, in this mode the monitors are useless as they only show the black cross cursor and are blank.

Something notable is that when configuring the monitors through nvidia-settings (not using PRIME), they disappear from the GNOME display settings.

Means you're running different screens, outputs on screen n are not available to clients on screen m. That's normal.

Here is my printenv output:

Do they apply to every context (prime and multiple screens)?

__GL_SYNC_DISPLAY_DEVICE=DP-4
__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0
CLUTTER_SHOW_FPS=1
CLUTTER_DEFAULT_FPS=144

You're not syncing and clutter is supposed to run at 144fps.
And if you're accidentally syncing, you'd end up syncing to the 144Hz DP-4 output.

And here is the Xorg log when NOT using PRIME displays:

The xorg log when trying to combine the GPUs is more relevant.
Also "xrandr --listproviders".

I'd try to convince the server to run on the GPU where the 144Hz output is attached and use the other one for reverse prime (ie. as VGA hops)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME#Reverse_PRIME
The "Identifier"s are arbitrary (you'll probably want sth like GTX1660 and GTX1050) but must be unique.
Screen, Device and Inactive references need to match the Identifiers.
"Driver" needs to be "nvidia" for all.
The most relevant part is the BusID, compare them w/ "lspci".

Sth. like

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "Dual_GPU"
        Screen 0 "GTX1660"
        Inactive "GTX1050"
        Option "AllowNVIDIAGPUScreens"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "GTX1050"
        Driver "nvidia"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "GTX1050"
        Device "GTX1050"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "GTX1660"
        Driver "nvidia"
        BusID "PCI:3:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "GTX1660"
        Device "GTX1660"
EndSection

"xrandr --setprovideroutputsource" should™ no longer be explicitly necessary, but if it is, the identifiers need to match those from "xrandr --listproviders"

to be honest I'm not even exactly sure what PRIME is

Semi-pun (optimus prime…) on nvidia's optimus technology (hybrid graphics, a battery saving intel chip w/ the nvidia chip being available on demand - it's actually not meant for some multi-gpu setup.

Re: Lag and stuttering on GNOME 43.2 (nvidia)

I'm not even sure about that, how can I check it?

I tried reverse PRIME with roughly the config you provided (meaning I made a few custom changes, at least the Bus IDs were flipped), but it doesn't make a difference. I'm not sure if this is just a feeling, but it kind of feels like there is less stuttering, just a lot of tearing. And it still feels like 60fps which it is, too. This problem seems incredibly challenging to find a workaround for, likely because I have two different GPUs which is not a common scenario. Since I'm very much done with NVIDIA's awful Linux drivers, I went ahead and bought an RX 6600. It should arrive in a few days, after which all of my problems should be gone (it will replace both NVIDIA GPUs). Still, if you have any further suggestions to fix this, please let me know because this could help someone else in the future.

You setup the system in either fashion and run

tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/$(pidof gnome-shell)/environ

Tearing is expectable for "__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0", but if that applies and clutter doesn't repaint at a higher refresh rate, it would still be gnome that's limiting the FPS (artifically)

Re: Lag and stuttering on GNOME 43.2 (nvidia)

Well, I was never able to figure out what exactly was wrong.

tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/$(pidof gnome-shell)/environ

I was able to find the variables from the output of this command (or a script rather), but I still have no idea what was the problem. Anyway, it doesn't really matter anymore as I got my RX 6600 and everything has been working perfectly so far, even on Wayland. The only downside I've noticed is that apparently the Radeon PRO drivers are required to use the AMD encoder on OBS. Whatever, it isn't a massive deal so I'm sure I can deal with it. Should I mark this thread as solved (it kind of is and isn't solved at the same time)? And finally, thank you for helping me out!
