[SOLVED] Speakers don't work with new battery in Dell XPS 13 9360.

I replaced the battery in my Dell XPS 13 9360. It wasn't an official Dell battery, and the bios didn't recognize the new battery type, but it still worked. I was just starting to feel pleased with myself when I realized that the speakers no longer work. Any time sound is supposed to be playing, there's just a very faint clicking from the built-in speakers.

Of course, I may have damaged the hardware while replacing the battery. But I'm hopeful it's just some configuration I need to change. Several forum results discuss power saving mode on the audio card controller, which seems a likely culprit since I've replaced the battery.

Based on the wiki and some Reddit threads, I've tried adding each of the below lines to the conf files /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, /etc/modprobe.d/disablePowerSave.conf, and /etc/modprobe.d/snd_hda_intel.conf:

options snd_hda_intel index=1,0
options snd_hda_intel power_save=0
options snd_hda_intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N

None of this has worked.

I have no idea what output is relevant, but other troubleshooting threads (the solution to this thread also did not work for me) asked for this stuff:

aplay -l

Invalid card number '0'.

cat /proc/asound/modules

Are these last two a problem in that there's a 1 and not a 0? Something about the default card number needing to be 0?

Any help appreciated!

Re: [SOLVED] Speakers don't work with new battery in Dell XPS 13 9360.

I just tried booting Ubuntu from a USB, and had the exact same problem there. Just faint, regular clicks from the speakers whenever they're supposed to be playing sound.

Re: [SOLVED] Speakers don't work with new battery in Dell XPS 13 9360.

I never understood if Manufacturers' Original Batteries (laptops, smartphones) have some sort of bult-in checker that "talks to" UEFI...
Anyway...
Can you check your aftermarket battery actually has same specs to the original one? See pages 20 and 21.
Can you check it with a multimeter?

Re: [SOLVED] Speakers don't work with new battery in Dell XPS 13 9360.

It seems to be working now.

For posterity:

I used this battery. It seems to have the same specs as the original Dell one.

I updated the BIOS, and the speakers still didn't work. I undid all the changes I made in my first post. Still didn't work.

To make sure I hadn't damaged the hardware, I put the original battery back in to see if the speakers worked. The speakers worked with the original battery.

Then I put the new battery back in, and now it's working too.

Guess the moral is to not only turn it off and back on, but also to unplug it and plug it back in? smile
