[SOLVED] GNOME/Wayland/Xorg/Vega 64/Monitors waking up from sleep.

Dual Monitors Instantly Wake Up From Sleep

I have recently installed a Vega 64 and switched from running GNOME under X11 to Wayland. Since then, the monitors wake up right after the turn off (takes about a second). Screen remains black, backlight is on, and mouse cursor visible. Currently looking for help with troubleshooting on this one.

Dug through almost all off the wiki, forums, and bug tracker with no obvious suspect. Currently going through gnome and amdgpu bugs to see if anyone else encountered this. Will report back what I find.

Might be related to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109246

UPDATE 1
Tested with X11 instead of Wayland and got the same results. Screens go to sleep and after a second wake up automatically, but this time you can see the lock screen background. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot would be extremely helpful. Also, under X11, keyboard and mouse backlight turns off (which is likely because they are pooled by the Razer Driver based on the X11 screensaver), but they remain on if running under Wayland.

UPDATE 2

Just to test it out, I removed the RX Vega 64, and installed my Nvidia 1070 (Asus 8GB Dual Fan). Installed Nvidia drivers and booted into GNOME. After set amount of time, screens went to sleep like they are supposed to. Based on this, I'm leaning towards AMDGPU being the likely culprit here as Xorg works with Nvidia but not AMDGPU.

Update 3

Replaced dispyport cable to just hdmi as it's the only input on the monitors. Same results. Also, I cannot boot with amdgpu.dc=0 as I get a complete hang as soon as systemd kicks in and so far haven't been able to ssh into the box to see the errors. Any help on diagnosing would be appreciated.

I wanted to do a bisect, but I haven't found a good working kernel version. I can really use some assistance bisecting this one to find what caused it or at least someone pointing me at the code I should likely be looking at.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Update 4

Did a bit more digging on this.

Tried to manually turn off the screen with the below command:

busctl --user set-property org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig /org/gnome/Mutter/DisplayConfig org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig PowerSaveMode i 1

Screen turns off and goes to sleep. However, a second later, they are added back in as could be seen in the below output from journalctl.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME/Wayland/Xorg/Vega 64/Monitors waking up from sleep.

Found a partial solution that seems to address the instant wake up under Wayland.

It seems that by default, the AOS2770SHE starts polling once display disconnects on one of its inputs. This seems to cause the actual system to wake up. However, this was not an issue before and used to function with no problems previously. It seems that something in amgdpu DC code changed that is picking up these polling requests.

To get the monitors to sleep properly, I did the following:

Set "Input Select":  Auto -> HDMI1
Set "DDC/CI": Yes -> No

Now the display sleeps as expected and wakes up with no issues. Still would like to know what changed to cause this to appear. I usually need to have the inputs set to Auto as I have a docking station plugged into the monitors for the work laptop.

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME/Wayland/Xorg/Vega 64/Monitors waking up from sleep.

@krutoileshii, thank you very much for your hard work!

I had problems in making KDE power saving settings work in my Arch Linux system. My monitor is AOC 27B2H, and the cpu is AMDGPU Ryzen 5 5600G. When I used a system based on Intel Core i5-8400, the monitor worked as expected with default factory settings with Arch Linux. However, with the new AMDGPU the monitor did not turn off as set in KDE energy saving settings, until I changed the monitor settings as suggested above:

"Input Select":  Auto -> HDMI1
"DDC/CI": Yes -> No

It seems that this solved my problem. Since "DDC/CI" is “Yes” in most monitors nowadays, I suppose many AMDGPU users may have problems when trying to save power. Is this the case, and if the solution suggested here is useful, who should we inform and how?

Re: [SOLVED] GNOME/Wayland/Xorg/Vega 64/Monitors waking up from sleep.

@Linski

I've since replaced my video card for a 5700xt. But still use the same monitors. I actually completely forgot about this. I'm gonna give it a try and see if it still and issue on my machine. If it is, I'm guessing that a big report against either mesa or amdgpu would be in order. I think it's AMDGPU in this case but not sure as there is a bunch of different subsystems.

So gave it a shot with the RX 6700 and it's the exact same symptoms.

Same problem with amdgpu BARCELO on AMD Ryzen™ 7 5825U ena GNOME 43 (wayland).

How can change "input select" and "DDC/CI" on GNOME?
Can i do this by command line?

Thank you.

That's not done on the desktop, but on the monitor settings. Might not have those depending on the monitor.
