Display Fading with Xorg [SOLVED]

Today I came back from a two week vacation and now I am having display issues with one of my three monitors. Prior to updating this issue was happening, and a full system update did not fix it.

I have also tried hard resetting my computer (power fully off) and unplugging and replugging in the monitor that isn't working.

Video of the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnogtIFL4vs

Xorg logs (DP-0 is the monitor that is not working properly):

It doesn't appear that any of the logs are providing any useful information, though it is possible that I am looking at the wrong logs.

Some other things to note:

The monitor works fine before starting Xorg (You can see the TTY text before I ran startx in the video).

The issue happens when using both dwm and KDE, I'm assuming that no other DE's will display properly either.

When booting into Windows 10, all of my monitors work fine. This leads me to believe that my monitor is not failing (however, please correct me if I'm wrong).

Finally, my leftmost monitor that works is the same exact model as the one that isn't working. Plus, this monitor was working before I left for my vacation. This indicates that it can't be some weird compatibility issue either.

Any thoughts? I've been stuck trying to fix this since I got back.

Whoops, sorry about that. I reuploaded the video and forgot to change the link. Link is fixed now

Re: Display Fading with Xorg [SOLVED]

Looks more like it turns off?
Is there still a signal? (the OSD would typically indicate otherwise)

xrandr -q
xset dpms force off; xset dpms force on

Couple of things:

[ 18.748] (II) LoadModule: "vesa"
[ 18.748] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vesa_drv.so

Get rid of xf86-video-vesa

When booting into Windows 10

3rd link below. Mandatory.

unplugging and replugging in the monitor that isn't working

Despite the windows situation and just to be sure: try to swap the cables and ouputs (ie. wire the bad monitor to the ouput where currrently one of the good ones is, to see whether it's the output or the monitor… or the cable)

Thank you, somehow this actually fixed the problem though I don't really understand why.

When I typed

xrandr -q

the output showed that the monitor was connected and on. In some cases, I was even able to move my mouse before my monitor slowly shut itself off.

I'll also follow your suggestion and remove xf86-video-vesa.

Kind of weird, but I'm going to mark this as solved since everything seems to be working now. Thanks for your help Seth.

EDIT:

After rebooting, I do not have issues anymore and do not need to enter the same command again, so the problem is fully resolved.

Good point, I think I forgot to do that after reinstalling Windows recently, thank you for pointing that out.

Re: Display Fading with Xorg [SOLVED]

Sorry, I marked this as resolved but the issue is happening again after I woke up. This time,

xset dpms force off; xset dpms force on

isn't fixing the issue.

I also tried switching the cables with one I know that works, however, the issue still keeps happening with the same monitor.

Despite the fact that it works perfectly fine on Windows (and was working fine last night), is it possible that my monitor is dying?

EDIT:
After waiting an hour and running

xset dpms force off; xset dpms force on

again, the issue went away. However, I now have an issue that I have no idea how to reproduce consistently.

Re: Display Fading with Xorg [SOLVED]

1. Try what happens when you plug it into the other output (don't switch the cables, but where you plug them)
2. See whether "xset dpms force off; sleep 5; xset dpms force on" is more reliable
3. Try to downgrade the nvidia driver to the 520xx version ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_Linux_Archive - use nvidia-dkms to build the module for the current kernel and the same version of nvidia-utils)

Re: Display Fading with Xorg [SOLVED]

I am currently unable to reproduce the issue anymore so I will mark this as solved again. Thank you for the help.
