Weird FPS issue in certain game on MSI GS66 UX11 laptop

This thread is not about "asking for a fix" but rather "asking me for which direction should I start troubleshooting" kind of thread.

My setup

> Gaming PC
>> NVIDIA 2080Ti graphics card
>> KDE Plasma, X11
>> 280Hz FHD monitor

> Gaming laptop (MSI GS66 UX11)
>> NVIDIA 3080 (mobile)
>> KDE Plasma, X11
>> 240Hz 2K display

Problem description

On PC I am playing "Insurgency: Sandstorm" (via Steam using Proton) game. It works perfectly, just like on Windows.

Now I am trying to play the same game using the same desktop setup on the laptop - FPS is ridiculously spiking, seems like in a range between 60fps to 200fps. If I enable in-game FPS stabilizer, it stabilizes it in a range between 60 to 70 fps. However, some other games work completely fine, such as Subnautica - stable 240 fps as expected.

Note that this laptop has mux switch so I can test both NVIDIA-only as well as Hybrid graphics, both "physically" wired directly to the display, but the result is the same...

What could be an issue here? I don't think it's the game's issue as it works totally fine on my desktop.

Other notes

For some reason, I have a feeling that this bug might be related as previously the whole laptop only worked with 60hz refresh rate, but Intel fixed their bug and it is working properly now. Could it be that Wine/Proton does not "understand" display specifications properly? But again - Subnautica works completelly fine with 240Hz...

Let's wait for experts here wink

Meanwhile, I can provide you some basic infos by my side:
- have a look at ProtonDB's relevant page of the game
- also have a look at PCGamingWiki's relevant page of the game
- follow updates on Valve's Proton GitHub page

Also, you could post here of Steam's terminal outputs... Start Steam within your preferred Terminal Emulator, launch the game as you normally do and the paste here output logs.

Are you potentially heat throttling or so? Check CPU/GPU temps during the spikes.
